The first step

Trent and I went to the doc Wednesday. I'm thinking that the Dr. must not have had time to read his chart before coming in because apparently for my age (27 in 2 weeks) I should already have children and the fertility issues are probably with me! Luckily for the Dr. Trent spoke up and said, I have CF, it should say that in my chart. But that didn't help much because apparently it could still be me. After the physical exam, the doc claims he did feel a vas and it should be working, (again, I'm the problem). He handed Trent a cup and told him to bring back a sample next Wednesday and we'd see where to go from there.
Now on to Plan B. He is going to talk to the clinic about a urologist that they might know of who has an idea about CF and we'll start there. I am also going to my gyno to get my own plumbing checked out just to be sure.

Definitely go to a uroligist that knows something about CF. My understanding is that you can't determine if a guy has cogenital absence of vas deferenes by physical examination--someone correct me if I am wrong. I think that they only way to tell is by doing a semen analysis. So, it sounds like this guy does not know what he is talking about--find another one!

Good luck!!

Sounds like the doctor needs quite a bit of education. How frustrating. My first recommendation would be to call around to some local IVF clinics and find out if they partner with any urologists when there is male factor infertility involved. You might get lucky like we did and find out that the IVF clinic actually has their own doctor in house (not a urologist though) who has done sperm retrievals before.

That is what happened with us. My IVF doctor had experience with other CF males (what a relief that was to hear!) and could do the retrieval himself, for $500, $1,100 if Mark wanted to be knocked out.

This sample the left though, should give a difinitive answer for the doctor to determine that you aren't the problem. How frustrating, I'm sorry you had to waste time with that doc.

Where do you guys live?

Lisa, palpating for a vas deferens is like palpating for a lump in the breast. Maybe you feel one, maybe you don't, might be something, might not be anything....only way is like you said, a semen analysis and/or an ultrasound of the testicles.
