Thoughts & Ideas for preschool book

Hi, I am the mother of a 3 yr old with CF and also friends with another mother that has a 3 yr old and a 1 yr old (both w\CF). We have been looking for a resource which will help us explain CF to our 3 yr olds, because they have questions. Unfortunately, there aren't any books available which are age appropriate, so we are considering creating our own resource/book.We have found some books (Taking CF to School, CF and Me) but we find that they only deal with the respiratory issues, and not enzymes and other issues these kids have. There are also different treatments for this disease as we have found out since we live in different provinces, and different issues for each child. We were wondering what other parents think should be included in this book. What kinds of questions have your kids asked? What have you had trouble explaining? What do you think they should or should not know at this age (2-5 yrs)? What things have worked for you in explaining their condition to them? The obvious is to be honest and simple, but we have found that even the simplest explanations are not answering their questions....and they are asking questions. We are not doing this for any personal gain, other than the satisfaction of knowing we are helping other parents by our experiences. Your input would be very helpful.Heather

Hi - I think all children are different and probably need different levels of explanation. I have found message boards like this one and CF Parents at Yahoo Groups to be a great place to get some ideas if you need them for specific questions. We are always honest and keep giving him answers until he feels he is satisfied; this guides us to determine what is age appropriate. It is probably helpful to him that I am diabetic and he sees that I have to do things that are different than other people too. If you have any specific questions that you feel you don't have an answer for, please ask here and the other message boards/chat groups and I am sure you will get many suggestions.Take Care!Jo Ann

Hi Heather,I also have a 3 yr. old w/CF. Our CF center gave us a book that has been very helpful. It's called "Mallory's 65 Roses." It talks about having treatments, taking enzymes, being frustrated at times, etc. I think it's an honest look (and a simple one) at a child's experience. I think it was sponsored by either TOBI or Chrion. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.Carey (e-mail: Bono40@aol.com)
