Thoughts on "used" or "rented" compressors?

SIX weeks ago we had clinic. Alyssa was prescribed pulmozyme. We got a months amount for free overnighted to us by the company. But when we got the pulmozyme we discovered that our compressor we were using for albuterol isn't on the approved list.

SO I called the CF center after her first dose and they said, yeah you'll need a new compressor. So I worked very closely with the RT to figure out what to get. We decided on a hospital grade 50psi compressor so that it would be good for any medicine that comes our way in the upcoming years. We got approval from our insurance company that they will cover the better machine. Our RT called the medical company that gets the machine and they majorly dropped the ball.

Weeks went by and I finally called to check on it. AFter much research, they realized it was on back order. Okay, how long will it take to come in. I don't know, I'll get back to you they told me. They didn't.

So I called again, this time they still don't know how much longer it will take. I made a bit of a fuss, straight out saying I have a kid with a lung disease, I can't wait indefinitely for this machine. So they are offerring to lend us one of theirs until a new one comes in. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

How will this compromise her germ wise??? If another CFer used the machine is it dangerous or the same as using the air in the hospital???? What should I do here?

Thoughts on "used

I don't have any insight on this other than when I had to send in DS' devilbiss compressor in for repairs, the medical supply company offered to rent us one and I had the same fears you did. I had a spare pari proneb ultra that we used for travel and used that one until we got a new devilbiss from the company.

What's the price out of pocket for a devilbiss or pari proneb ultra? I know when we got our orginal from apria -- they charged our insurance company $365 for it, so I've since ordered online for a lot less money. I believe the devilbiss was a little over $100 and the pari proneb ultra II we have now for travel ran under $50. Though I suppose you don't really nead a spare for travelbeing that you have your original compressor. Just thinking outloud...

I perzonally would not let my kiddo use a used machine. This sounds a bit ridiculuous on the wait time!
I would call them everyday. I would also call the eflow people. The eflow is the best neb. in my opinion anyways, plus, it takes half the time to neb the meds which is great for little ones.

I would be very careful about using a used one. Certainly make sure they have germicided it and that it is throughly clean before using if you go that route.
