time frame for fecal fat test results?

Hi there,

My daughter just completed the fecal fat test to check for pancreatic insufficiency and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get the results? We live in Omaha and had to have them flown to Mayo in Rochester, MN. We had her on the high-fat diet and she gave us several "good" samples. She has very foul smelling, soft stools, which are always pale in color, which is why they're checking for PI. Her sweat test came back negative, which I've been told is a good sign, although not necessarily accurate 100% of the time. Hoping the fecal fat test will give us more information.

sorry you didn't get any responses - my guess is 1-2 weeks. My daughter had it done quite after the fact, and we were pretty sure he was pancreatic sufficient so it wasn't a nail biting experience, so I don't recall for sure.

That's good they are pursuing fecal testing after sweat testing, but they should also be doing full genetic testing -- my kids would not have been diagnosed correctly because they are both pancreatic sufficient and they have normal sweat tests, but when we did complete genetic testing we found two very common CF genes.

Do you recall what your daughter's sweat test number was? A lot of people are to "normal" but really they are a high normal -- any time you get CF symptoms with a sweat test above the teens or 20's the doctors should be doing full genetic testing - many do not do it, but we have seen on this website many many people who sweat test low but do in fact have CF.

Oh, and you might try posting on the adults board, because the newly diagnosed boards see even fewer responses than the family section.
