To Sterilize or Not to Sterilize?

Should nebulizer tubing be sterilized after each use - especially considering that medications/moisture don't enter the tubing?(provided your nebulizer is working properly!)

If you do sterilize, how long do you consider the tubing to be "clean"? Example, if boiling or cleaning in the dishwasher, the tubing accumulates moisture. This moisture is "sterile" upon completion of whichever appropriate method you use. I routinely spin the tubing after cleaning (makes for a nice noise, but watch out if you get hit!) to rid it of excess water. Moisture is often still present afterwards....

Never get the tubing wet- according to manufacturer's instructions as well as instructions from our clinic.

The tubing is pretty much impossible to get adequately dry once water has been poured into it, setting up a breeding ground for bugs... the air that flows through the tubing can then pick up anything growing in it. Running the compressor after the nebs are finished and disconnected will help dry any moisture that has gotten into it during the session. We're given tubing with every set of neb cups so we can replace it every few months. (We replace the tubing after Emily's gotten over an exacerbation, too.)

Wow...I could've sworn seeing posts where others sterilize the tubing as well. I definitely agree with your position....will alter that one immediately!

Plain as day - written in the instruction manual - DO NOT GET TUBING WET. The more I think about it, I do recall asking her doctor if sterlizing in the dishwasher was okay. I asked if everything should be sterlized and she said all parts are safe to wash in the dishwasher. I assumed that meant everything. Grateful I know this now. Wish I knew then. Yikes.
