TOBI and Colistin

the way i understand it, both tobi and colisitn are used for pseudomonus. my question is, if it is killing all of the PA, what about the other bugs in our lungs? doesn't it give them a chance to "flourish" (relatively) because they have less competition or something?

it seems weird that when we do IVs (well, for me) i am always given at least 2 antibiotics for each of my bugs, PA and cepacia ii. (not the very bad one.) but now i am on the tobi for a month and there is nothing to keep the cepacia in check and i am beginning to suspect that i would actually be healthier right now if i stopped it.

confussed--

Maybe, but then again maybe it frees your white blood cells to attack the capecia while the Tobi works on the pseudo.

And if your other bug is staph, well then it's better to have the staph anyways hehe.

I dunno, how do you feel? Obviously if you feel more sick, then it might not be a good thing, but if you feel physically better, than how could it not? I don't know, if your capecia stays in check, it's better to beat one back a bit then have them both flourish like mad?

I dunno heheh.

TOBI and colistin are one of the broadest spectrum antibitoics out there. They not only kill Staph, Strep, but PA, H. Flu as well. But you have to understand. Take "kill" with a grain of salt. Since we have CF, we rarely get rid of bacteria 100%. We are all amost chronically colonized.

Therefore, all these antibiotics just get the bacteria #s low to where you have less symptoms. They are very rarely elimintated.

I have just PA and I am always given 2 antiobiotics when I'm on IV's. This is because PA is difficult to kill and two seperate antiboitiocs have a higher chance of killing more of the PA.

If you are on TOBI, it's keeping your PA levels in check. There is little relationship between PA and cepacia.

There is however a relationship between Staph and PA. Staph keeps PA in check. So choosing antibiotics that kill staph and not PA can allow PA #s to grow.

amy, so TOBI is killing my PA and my staph?

kiel, i kinda figured that was you... as for what you said, the thing is, i feel like i'm NOT getting better. i feel like the TOBI kept my lungs from getting 'ugly' after my last cold went to my chest, but now that i'm over the cold and feeling back to normal, my mucus is still f*ed up. it's different than it's ever been. so i'm suspicious that maybe i won't fully get over this funky phelem until i'm OFF the TOBI. crazy?

I am totally confused here... Am I the ONLY one who cultures PA constantly and my clinics do NOT put me on IVs for it unless it is causing me problems? Plus, even though I've been on TOBI (no longer on it) or colistyn for the past 7-8 years, I've NEVER had a culture show up clear of PA... and, usually its VERY heavy. So, if others have PA clear up and colistyn or TOBI kills the PA, why don't I get these results OR why am I even doing these antibiotics??? I have NEVER had a culture clear of PA whether I've been on IVs or on inhaled antibiotics. Sounds like other on here ARE able to get rid of or "kill" it. What gives??? Don't the clinics I've been to care that I culture it 100% of the time (usually heavy mucoid and non-mucioud.) Urgh.

I'm the same. I culture PA ALL the time regardless of the meds I am on. Even when I've been on IVs twice the PA levels have never gone down. I am always consistantly culturing PA +4. My current doc doesn't like to put me in unless its causing lots of problems, and even then he's hesitant. I mean sure I feel better, but my levels never go down.
