I was just wondering if anyone is on Omegaven? I was investigating TPN and came across this....TPN usually has Omega 6 in it and can cause liver damage but they are now researching Omega 3 instead and it seems to not cause and maybe reverse liver damage...Is anyone tried this? I asked Graysons GI dr and she said it was not FDA approved yet but that alot of hospitals do have it for compassionate use and they are studying it because it does seem to work.

My son was born Sept 2006 with MI. He was on TPN for almost three months and now is suffering from liver disease.
While my son was still on TPN my husband researched TPN and liver disease and found out about the Omaga 3 just like you did. We were told the same that it was not FDA approved. We were also told that since it was not FDA approved that insurance companys would not cover the cost.

I do not know if the omega 3 would have prevented my sons liver disease. From my understanding kids born with MI have a higher chance of developing liver disease anyway. The bile duct that takes the bile from the liver to the gallblader can have the same thing happen to it that happened to the small intestines and the meconium. That is what happened to my son.

Grayson had MI also and just recently had a G tube so they are cutting back on the TPN so we will wait and see. The GI dr said that the results of using TPN with omega 3 seem to be beneficial and they are studying it themselves now. Graycie goes from jaundice to clear quite often but the last time they checked her numbers were really good. I am just concerned if she has to be on TPN for any length of time it could cause liver damage. She also has been having trouble with her gallbalder.
