Tummy Ache

Our son has complained about a tummy ache the last few days. I first blew it off as him tring to get out of bedtime or nap. However, he now isn't being himself at all. There is no puking like the last Bowel obstruction in May. My head feels like it's going to explode, until the XRAY's tomorrow. I"m playing 20 questions in my mind. Is this it are we going to be admitted again tomorrow? I need to learn that there is nothing I can do to control it. It's sooo hard. On top of his tummy issues he came down with a nasty head cold today.

Have any of you or your children had a bowel obstruction again, after only 5 months of time? It seems crazy to being going through this again. Praying XRAYS look okay, but I'm planning for the worse.

Thanks,

Mommy to Johnny 4w/cf and bailey now 2 no/cf

DS' only issue was when he ate a huge amount of peanuts one day at his grandparents house and woke up the next morning saying he was full -- didn't want breakfast and later at lunch time that his tummy felt funny around his belly button. I gave him milk of mag and was panic struck until he finally pooped the next day. I was terrified. His doctor did say the first time he threw up after his surgery two years ago that we'd probably be freaking out, second guessing ourselves. We had similar feelings this past fall when he got a stomach bug (rotavirus) and was sick for about a week.

Here's hoping for a positive outcome tomorrow. I always think about how long ds was sick or had stomach issues before we figured out what was wrong with him, so I'm a little more comfortable about figuring it out and hope that we'd catch one much sooner should he have another obstruction.

X-rays yesterday looked fine. Wow, what along 24hrs to get the results. GI doc was out of the office yesterday. Just got the phone call a couple hrs ago. What a relief!!! Told me to stop the miralax. How long about does it take to get out of your system?

Thanks Liza

Miralax can take a few days to work once you start and I'd assume it takes a little time to completely clear your system after the last dose, as it works it's way through the digestive tract. It's not going to hurt him to have taken it even without being obstructed, so don't worry about that- he just may end up passing a few looser than usual stools.

I'm so glad he's OK! What a relief for you. :)

Re. frequency of them- when Emily was having a lot of trouble with this a year ago, she had one very severe one and several less severe ones all in about a 6mo period. We have a better handle on it now, able to recognize the earliest signs of them as well as preventative tx with Miralax.

Sarah,

So glad things are ok. One of the things I do for my daughter is give her Prune juice everyday. I've been doing this as long as she's drank juice. When she was a toddler, I would give it to her straight. Usually in a fun cup so she's more likely to drink it. I have also done half prune juice/half apple juice when she started complaining about the taste.

Now we do prune juice soda. She does half prune juice/half caffeine free coke. It's bubbly and sweet and keeps her regular. I do use diet coke cause of the sugar. It does keep her regular. On occasion she does get constipated, I give her Miralax, a capful and clean her out.
