Well my son gets alot of bellyaches and if he misses his enzymes man he gets pretty bad. It really is depending on how much fat is in what he eats. Say he ate some french fries and forgot one or two enzymes he is in pain or he runs to the bathroom. Also if your weight goes up you may need a enzyme adjustment. Also he takes prilosec for his tummy. Is your daughter on anything like that or previcid my daughter has cf also and she is on previcid twice a day for her stomach and it helps with absorbing the enzymes. This is just our story. I would let my cf doc know and or gi doc. But missing enzymes is not good. I have never gave my son pain medication for stomach aches. It could be alot of things. Once my son was having alot of cramping and he was not even able to get up and I took him to the hospital to find out he had colitus and he was in for two weeks. So it is really hard to say.

My daughter takes enzymes whenever she eats, but she also takes one Prevacid solutab a day. The timing of the dosage for Prevacid due to her other meds is a little tricky; therefore we have missed it on two occassions. And I have definitely noticed a change for the worse in tummy status/bm's on the two occassions that we have missed her Prevacid.

Which is a long way to say that I agree with the previous anon and you should check with your doc about Prevacid or something else that helps the enzymes do their work better.

Most of my tummyches from missing enzymes are gas related and I often find gas X does the trick. As an adult, however, I have learned it ain't worth it to miss enzymes...might be a lesson your child will learn on her own. I also have used pepto and other meds like that for CF. No, overall we aren't supposed to use that stuff, but sometimes you have to - like if you are going on an airplane for example...or a hockey game! If it goes away you can chalk it up to missing enzymes or something that she's eating. but if it is recurrent, check into it. When I was a kid I stopped taking my enzymes for a while, unbeknownst to my paretns, and ended up getting a fecal block - ow!!

You know the other thing I thought of is gallstones - my kid is on Ursodiol because of a high liver enzyme count (detected by bloodwork). I'm sketchy on the details because it is all still fairly new to me but I believe the Ursodiol is another way to help her digest fat and to keep gallstones from forming.

Also, no wonder she doesn't take her enzymes; if her tummy always hurts her anyway!

Best of luck to her and to you!

Dana, mom to Katy (3, cf) and Kyra (6, no cf).
I was the also the second anon post about the Prevacid.

Faith has been complaining of tummy aches for the last few months. She was in the hospital over the summer for 7 weeks and ended up contracting a horrible mycobacteria. Her pains started when this occured. They have increased her enzymes to 6 per meal and 4 with a snack. She takes MT12's. She also takes prevacid once a day in the morning. She takes the enzymes and Prevacid before breakfast and all other pills after breakfast.

I'm going to ask about taking prevacid twice a day. We've been going back to see the dr. every 3 weeks so they are aware of this.

Good luck.

Carol
