I don't know what is going on with my 6 year old.

He obviously has texture issues and only eats really soft items easily (applesauce, avocados, cheese, pasta)

When he eats anything with texture, his gag reflex takes over sometimes and he pukes. It takes him like 2 minutes to chew just a small piece of chicken or any meat for that matter.

I am not sure if I am working with something psychological here or physical.

He is on Prilosec 20mg to help his enzymes work better.

Any thoughts, suggestions???

blesssings,

I would be interested too. My dd is 2.5 y/o and has the same issues (no puking though). I thought it was her age but since yours is 6 y/o, it might be CF related?

We have 2 girls in our family with gagging and puking issues with food or meds. Lainey who has no CF was awful when it came to food or meds and would gag and puke before she even took a bite. Graycie with CF is getting better but she sometimes would gag and puke even watching someone else eat. In our family I think alot of it is mental. If something was introduced to them that had a different texture and made them gag, I think they had it in their head and would gag and even puke when they saw it again. I do know it gets better with age.

Jesse went through a time when he would puke during every meal. In first grade he would sit in the nurses office with a bucket to eat lunch.

For him it was both behavioral and physical. Sometimes people just have a very strong gag reflex. It also could be sinus postnasal drip causing gag. Check on that. I think Jesse just got over it, I can't recall an intervention.

good luck!

Jordan gagged so badly as a baby/toddler. I think his was sinus drainage & swelling. I've always had choking issues myself, particularly when I'm having a bad sinus day.

Emily had a lot of trouble with texture, gagging, choking on thin liquids, etc when she was younger as well. She had extensive feeding therapy with her speech/language pathologist and it helped a great deal. In her case the muscles & various movements all involved in effective chewing and swallowing needed to be strengthened and she needed to better learn to coordinate them... and she needed help to overcome sensory issues as well. I would ask for a referral to a feeding specialist or SLP to help with this, since this may not just go away on it's own and with some help can lead to much better eating of a lot more food (with a lot less frustration all the way around.)

Plus, such frequent throwing up always had me a little concerned about aspiration so gaining some control over the gag reflex was a good thing. She still gags easier than her brothers but it's so much better than it used to be. Things like this can be age related or behavioral but long-lasting persistent problems should be looked into to rule out something more, I think... a 6yr old who has only been able to handle a diet this limited for years on end now may well have something more going on. (Especially since he's taking something for reflux I wouldn't necessarily chalk it up to a 'cf thing'.)

Have you seen a feeding therapist? Alyssa saw one through the CFcenter a few yrs ago when she wouldn't eat. The therapist had lots of good ideas and seemed to know the cause of many behaviors. (For example: drinking only water or lemonade was a sign of reflux issues)
