I was diagnosed with this and they just told me to take extra calcium supplements and I'm supposed to take Boniva once a month.

Yes. I was diagnosed with this as well after a bone density scan. I was quite shocked because I choked down milk ALL the time. I was the first to point out to others that they should drink more milk to avoid osteoporosis. Ironic isn't it. I take calcium twice a day.

I had a bit of a low bone density and was put on Fosamax. And already was taking vitamin D because of my CF ofcourse.
Post transplant is it standard to be on Fosamax and Calcichew so I was put on Calcichew as well, this is because of the Pred we take all the time.

A few years later research had shown that you don't have to take Fosamax for years on end (don't know the exact amount of years). I had already been on it for about 12 years so we decided to quit taking that.

This past August I had a repeated bone density scan. It showed my bone density had gone down quite a bit and I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis (somewhere in the 4 years prior to that it must have been Osteopenia).

My transplant team consulted with a specialist and this specialist told them to start me on Fosamax again. As it probably won't hurt me but maybe help me.
Also I was on Cerazette for birthday control, this is a pill without Estrogen, compaired to other pills it has only one hormone in it.
However the specialist said that Estrogen can help bone growth. So we changed my pill around as well.

Hopefully the combination of Fosamax, Calcichew, vitamin D and the Estrogen that I get in my pill will help.

Its completely normal for this to happen, osteoperosis/osteopenia goes along with CF like many other things because we don't absorb all our calcium and Vit D. I was on Fosamax originally but had horrible side effects from it and was switched to Boniva which has been fine but I have trouble remembering to take it because it's only once a month. At my last pre-transplant appointment I met with the endocrinologist and he suggested switching to either the injectable Boniva which is 3 times a year I think or to Reclast which is a once a year iv infusion. The nice things about these is I'd have it done at regular follow up appointments so nothing for me to remember and because it goes directly into the bloodstream there is no problems with absorption.
