Update on Tonsils

It has been almost a week since Stacia got her Tonsils out. She is doing much better. I want to thank everyone for their help with the med. problem especially Liza's husband.

Our new problem is she is just filling up with mucus. She is really unable to cough because her throat still really hurts. Plus she knows that when she does cough it gets in her throat and almost strangles her. She is just not able to get it to come out. I don't know if it is because she has not been able to take her meds. since they were all pills and she couldn't swollow them, and the Dr. said to wait a few days to do the vest because it might irritate her throat. I don't know what to tell her to do.

Does anybody know if this is a normal thing after surgery. We are still on antibiotics so hoping nothing will start making her sick from all the congestion. Plus don't know how long before we should call the doc.

This is a real dilemma. When I had my gall bladder out, I couldn't cough and got a really bad exacerbation. The mucus that forms every day was accumulating and with not being able to get it out-- you get into trouble. I'd start with calling the doctor immediately and ask how she can the mucus out of her lungs.

There have been other times that I couldn't cough (such as with hemoptysis) and my doctor had a few suggestions for me. I tried to get the mucus out gently by doing the following (check with your doctor):

I had to use a giant massager (you can get it from places liked Brookstone) and move it over the lungs (front and back) You can adjust the speed. This was to loosen mucus gently. Then I did sort of a CPT. I just lied over the couch arm on to the seat. After a few days, when I could tolerate it, I had my boyfriend "hit" me on the back lightly. Hot steamy showers helped. As does leaning over a steamy pot on the stove with a towel over your head. Again, don't know what she can tolerate.

I was also prescribed a nebulized drug that was gentle -- perhaps your doctor can prescribe something.

Maybe you should ask the doctor if any of her pills can be taken any other way. Eg.Opening capsules and mashing it into something soft. And any alternatives for tablets? Pharmacists are good to consult also for ideas you can present to your doctor.

I'm sure the antibiotics are helping somewhat, but you never know what bug could pop up. So I guess you have to really try to get that mucus out.

I don't have any suggestions, but I seem to recall having lots of extra saliva and mucus in my throat when I had mine out and also because I had so much extra room in my throat since my tonsils were so enlarged, that I had to RELEARN how to eat and swallow. I would cautiously drink slowy lest milk/water shoot out my nose. Take tiny little bites because I didn't have as much control as before and would feel as if I was choking. So I imagine it's quite frightening to have all that extra mucus lodging in her throat.
