Is it common for a 2 and a half year old with cystic fibrosis to get urinary tract infections? She has been potty training, and hasn't been wearing diapers.. but we have been keeping up with higiene and everything. But now she has a fever and the doctor believes that is what it is. I am jsut wondering if they are common with cf or not.. Thanks.

it's possible.

urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria are in the urethra. often times that type of bacteria is e. coli or PA.

Antibiotics (like many that CF patients are often on) can kill bacteria in the lungs, and can also kill good bacteria in the GI tract or uretrha. This can lead to an overgrowth of other bacteria that cause a UTI.

Plus, all it really takes is a wipe from "back to front" instead of "front to back" to transfer e. coli from the anal area to the urethra. it hapens.

take care and good luck.

Ditto what amy said, but also, make sure that shes not wiping in the wrong direction when she wipes, and tell her that she needs to go from front to back when wiping. That way if you aren't always there when she's going potty (or even exploring her own body) she knows.

during potty training for our oldest (girl) she got one and so did our friends daughter a couple times from not wiping the correct way. The joys of girlhood.

In the same vein as what Amy is saying about good bacteria...because CFer's use antibiotics more frequently, they have an increased change of developing yeast overgrowth in the intestines and UT. This imbalance can lead to digestive upset, UTI and a miraid of other issues if it goes on. Often this can be the underlying issue. Daily probiotics (acidophilius) is a must for all CFer's in my opinion. There are tons of great chewables on the marker KidDouphilus is one of them. This might really help balance things out.

Keeping sugar and breads to a minimum are also critical to maintain a good digestive tract.

Best Wishes,
Jody
