My daughter who is 2 w/CF was on albuterol from 3 months on. She is so full of energy and being on Albuterol seem to make her more hyper and was also having trouble sleeping at night. I had called the CF clinic and asked about only using albuterol in the morning, but was told to use it as needed (mainly if she is coughing alot). She is now only on pulmicort twice a day and I have seen a big difference in her, also along w/CPT's. She sleeps more at night, doesn't seem as jittery and also I've noticed a big change in her sinses. Sorry to go on but my question is, Not using albuterol will it hurt with lung function or make them worse? I know it helps the lungs stay open, but dosen't pulmicort also work the same? Thanks for listeningam

My son was on albuterol twice a day ..and sometimes we notice that his legs were shaking. The next cf clinic the doctor chance him to pulmicort twice a day and xopenex as needed. I belive xopenex works like the albuterol but don't make him shake. I ask once about the difference and they told me thet the pulmicort works in long term. and the xopenex/albuterol works at once, That is why we use it when he is coughing a lot, and to him it works in minutes from the begining of the treatment.valmom to torinw/ cf 11 months and 26 days....almost one year

Albuterol/xopenex and pulmicort do not work the same way and are not interchangeable. Pulmicort is an inhaled steroid. It is a long-term medicine that reduces the inflammation in the lungs, making them less reactive. Albuterol and/or xopenex are short acting bronchodilators that open the airways up temporarily but do nothing to address the inflammation in the lungs. Xopenex and albuterol work the same way, xopenex is just a purer form so has less side effects for most people. HTH.

I should have added that it shouldn't affect your dd's lung function to drop albuterol as long as she's not symptomatic right now.
