Vanco...Red Man Syndrome

Aidan, aged 4, got a PICC line yesterday to start Vanco for MRSA which is in his lungs and sinuses. He was going to get a port but they changed their minds in case it was systemic MRSA?

He started Vanco in the hospital yesterday and his head started itching like crazy and he developed the Red Man Syndrome. Benadryl and a slower infusion stopped it. This morning the nurse came for his first at home and it took 3 1/2 hours! That's 7 hours daily on IVs. Plus an hour of the VEST plus all the other crap. Ughh..Any others have this issue?

Ugh! Yes, lots of people have had this happen. SOmeone wrote about it the other day. NOT fun! How long does he have to be on IVs? Hope it goes quick, but especially I hope it knocks out the MRSA!

omg that's me exactly!!!! when I go on vanco my head and scalp itch so bad I feel like ripping out my hair. benadryl seems to help me as well as slower infusions. I've sat there stuck to vanco for 4 hours at a time! The good thing for me (and hopefully for you guys), is that the more I'm on vanco, the less it bothers me. I was on 3hour infusions for a few days in the hospital (with benadryl) and was able to steadily decrease it to just about where all my other IV meds were at (like an hour).

Feel better...and you guys are not alone. I'll keep my fingers crossed that aiden gets used to vanco like I do and he'll have less med filled hours to deal with.

Yes, both my daughter, Kayla, and my nephew, Dalton, get Red Man Syndrome with Vanc! And both have to take Benadryl prior to running the Vanc. It is a bummer to have to do that on top of everything else, but the Vanc sure does help out<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
