Very loose stools

Hello,

I am having quite a bit of trouble with my daughter and her stools! They have suddenly become very loose. If she has a pull up on they are orange around the outside and I even see yellow fat in them- terrible I know! She was just on augmentin for 14 days and I know that can cause bad stools- but they were perfect on that! Now, disgusting! I am wondering if the Prilosec has anything to do with it. The pharmacist got me all freaked with the Prilosec and antibiotics saying I had to space them so much that I will admit we skipped the Prilosec during the 14 days (yes, not a great mom on that one.) I have a friend that is a pediatric GI and she said she does tell her patients Prilosec can cause loose stools....Have any of you experienced this? We have clinic in 2 days so we will definitely discuss this, but I am not overly thrilled/confident with our clinics dietician so I wanted your advice.

Thanks!

Prilosec and antibiotics can definately cause loose stools, but what you are describing sounds more link malabsorption to me. The antacid and antibiotic shouldn't (I don't think) cause you to see fat and produce the trademark orange color.

I would question whether her enzyme is working correctly/dosed correctly. The absence of Prilosec could be causing a change in enzyme function.

ALso, has she ever had c.diff? C.diff results from long-term antibiotic use. Basically, the BAD bacteria in the gut flourish when the good stuff is killed off by the antibiotic. The stools with C.diff are horrific. I can't remember them being orange, but they STINK and are very different than usual. I'd ask for them to run a test on a stool sample, jsut to be safe.

Good luck!

The antibiotics stay in the system for a while and they can mess up your gut pretty bad. The antibiotics destroy not only the bad bacteria, but the good as well. For my kids, when they take them, their stools look like they do when their enzymes are not working (loose, fatty and just plain yucky) and this lasts up to 2 weeks after stopping the antibiotics. I always up their probiotics, significantly) for the duration of taking the antibiotics and 2 weeks after and they do SOOOOOOO much better.

blessings,
missa
