vest settings and use?

Hi - I was just curious what settings everyone uses for their vests and do you stop at certain intervals to try and cough up stuff? My son has been using his vest for 4 years and still is not very good at coughing stuff up. Thanks.

Just a thought but maybe its not that you don't have the right settings, he may just not have anything to cough up. I know I didn't have a productive cough until my late teens.

But to answer your question, when I had my 1st vest, I did 3 sets, 10 minutes each, on 12, 14, 16. When I got the smaller vest, I bumped up the frequency to 13, 15, 17, so it would feel like my old vest. The pressure is set on 6.

Hope this helps!

The vest doesn't work for everyone; I'd look into different methods, too. I know some cf centers swear by the vest and nothing else now, but don't let that talk you out of it. Different people need different things. =-)

Jo Ann,

Jarod is right, the vest doesn't work for everyone-some actually benefit more and like the manual chest PT. It reall is a matter of personal preference. That being said your son has been using the vest for quite a while now, and I assume that since he is young and living at home it is being usesd as often, or nearly as often as it is suppose to be. So, it would make since that there is nothing signifigant for him to be coughing up unless he is having an exaserbation and congestion (cold, cough...) because it is being used on a continual basis therefore preventing a large amount of build up in the lungs.

For example, my husband stopped doing manual chest PT at about 14 or so (and I don't know if the vest was avilable then, but his family wouldn't have been able to afford it anyways) so he coughs a lot and coughs up a lot of stuff. He has had the vest now for about 2 months and I notice that he is heavily coughing a lot less (although still coughing) and he isn't bringing up as much stuff on a daily basis as he use to, I think as time goes on it will continue to decrease a bit, although with him being 24 it will never be fully alleviated because of the damage already done.

It's just a though, but might be applicable to you.
