Vest Settings

Hi all, I was wondering if some of you could share what settings you use with the Vest. For our 22 month old boy we were told to use Pressure 6, Frequency 14.

I tend to like to turn it up, but my wife doesnt. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Barry, Jill & Derek

I'd check with your doctor. I know U of M has a whole list of different settings and amount of times on each one to switch to in order to hit more key places. But with a toddler... they get so strange about new things -- you'd hate to have the kid develop a phobia about the vest and then have to strap them in it kicking and screaming.

I have a son that is 3 1/2. We have Pressure set at 10, Frequency 12. He tends to do better with the slower shake, higher pressure. Will not do the total 20 minutes any faster, tears the vest off himself.

My son (33 months old) just got his vest 2 weeks ago and the Nurse sent by HillRom told us to set it at 5 and 12 and to run it 15 minutes. I have no idea if that was specified by the Dr. or not - we'll be asking about it at his next CF clinic visit.

We've been taking a low-key approach to get him used to the idea and not really pushing it since his lungs have been clear - so we've been letting him use the foot pedal to turn it on and off at will and also press the button to change the frequency settings just to make it more like play than like another health chore

Sami is almost three and we set the pressure at 4 and gradually turn up the frequency from 10 to 12 during a period of twenty minutes.

Maria (mother of three daughters, the youngest w/cf)

Reilly is 29 months, and she uses the vest on pressure 6, frequency 12. The Dr. said we could use it from 4-6 pressure, and 10-12 frequency.

I would check with your Respiratory Therapist/Pulmonologist. My daughter was 2 when she started using it and has been doing the same settings since she got it.

She does:
Pressure 5
Frequency 8 (10 minutes)
Frequency 10 (10 minutes)
Frequency 12 (10 minutes)

HTH,
Kelli - mom of Sydney 2.5 wcf

Thanks all. We have been going by what our HillRom representative told us, which seems to be similar or maybe a little bit higher frequency than others here. Well talk to Derek's doctor during our next clinic.

FYI, We let Derek watch TV during vest sessions such as wiggles, bob the builder, winged migration, muppets and he almost never has a problem with wearing the vest or treatments.

Thanks again.

I just found out today that Cheyenne's dr is going to order the vest for her....I am so glad too....does anyone's child not like it or likes it less than manual cpt? I am afraid she will not like it.

Debbie,

I don't know about a 5 year old, but my 17 year old just got hers and she loves it! I love it too!!! It's a whole lot easier on me :)

Seriously though, they are very convenient. My daughter can be doing almost anything else at the same time and be using both of her hands for other things, like homework or pulmozyme and be watching tv too! It's a lot better than me pounding on her (although when she needs a specific place or is having trouble moving something, we still do manual) but the vest is better than the hand held vibrator that we also have because it still has to be held by her or someone else and moved all around the chest and back -- the vest just strap it on and sit -- no keeping track of the time or place that has been done!

We compared the medipulse brand and the vest brand -- the Vest by Hill-Rom was our choice -- smaller, better portability (the duffle bag is great and has room for everything together plus extras you might want to through in) and is carry-on size for flying. The medipulse brand had a carrying case on wheels but is heavier and has no place to store the tube & vest -- seems really silly to me!
