I am not sure if this works or not, but if it does not, Sasuka (SP?) has done lots of research and has put together a great blog on it. Search her old blogs and you will find it.

1. Your doc has to prescribe it to you

2. It sometimes can be hard to get them to pay... but there is well documented evidence that patients who use the Vest do better clinically than those who don't use this and this can give you amunition to fight the insurance companies if they give you grief

3. Cash price is around $12,000 - $16,000

4. I love mine. I was without it for 2 weeks when I broke it in Europe and I saw an immediate decline in my health. You'll hear varying experiences but for me, it has been a God-send.

5. Several companies make it. HillRom and Respirtech are two. If you want to read more, go to my blog about Dr. Warwick. He's the one who invented the technology and therefore, in my opinion, speaks the most credibly about the Vest. There are differences in the machine types (which I had no idea about until I visited him)

I am trying to get one for my 9 year old son. We have one on trial from The Vest - Hill Rom. I think we've had it since April or so - our insurance keeps denying it. I'm waiting for them to call me and ask "What's next?" We can't afford to pay for one - but I would sure hate to lose it now. I don't think insurance understands the PREVENTATIVE word that goes with CF. I guess if my son would have been hospitalized alot - maybe then they would pay - who knows?? So now we just wait and see!

I got one a few months ago and love it. The cash price is $16,000 - but we finally got my insurance to cover it. HillRom is great-they wrote a letter to my insurance company and the insurance company agreed to cover it. The portion I have to pay is about $2,156.00, which to us is alot of money, but definitely worth it. Once I pay that-it is all mine. And I have heard that HillRom is great as far as letting you make payments-they haven't billed us yet but I am sure that is coming soon, as it has all been ran through my insurance.
I really like it-and it does seem to definitely help. They started me out with the chest vest (smaller) but I then had that replaced (HillRom sent it out for free) the full vest, which works MUCH better for me. So far, HillRom has been FANTASTIC to work with.

I hope that you will educate yourself on choices beyong HillRom. Respirtech is just as helpful with insurances, but since they're brand new, not as many people have great stories to tell because of their time on the market.
