Vitamin D

My doctor has suggested that I take Ergocalciferol, a presciption vitamin D supplement. My D is in a low normal range and they like it a bit higher. That was also at the end of last summer when it should have been higher due to the sun. Have any of you ever taken this supplement? I was wondering about the connection between Vit. D and depression because I tend to get major SAD and that just seemed to make sense that my D level would play into that when the sun is not shining. Anyway there are a lot of articles on this subject on the web. Here is one I found:

</a>I have not filled the prescription yet, I will let you all know if I notice a difference. Also, please post if you have ever taken this.

I've heard of vitamin B (folate) deficiency being linked to depression, but not vitamin D specifically. Thanks for the link.

D: also called calciterol, vitamin D is a precursor to calcium absorption. It helps the body maintain bone density. This is one vitamin that the body is able to generate on its own. Exposure to direct sunlight in reasonable amounts is what triggers the body to produce this vitamin.

Food sources of Vitamin D include milk, butter, egg yolks, and fatty fish. These are excellent food choices for people with cystic fibrosis since they provide high calories, good and some protein. The body doesn't need much vitamin D - only 5 micrograms.

Vitamin D deficiency commonly presents itself as diarrhea, loss of appetite and headaches. Determining whether these symptoms are caused by lack of vitamin D or are signs of some other complication of cystic fibrosis can be difficult, especially in children.

Vitamin D comes from sunlight and people tend to get sad during the winter because of lack of sunlight. So from what I have heard yes Vitamin D levels can affect depression.

I know I make sure that my calcium has added Vitamin D. But I have never taken a vitamin D supplament.

I was diagnosed with eickets last year due to undetectable levels of Vit D. They gave me a supplement that totaled 40,000; and I took it every other day for a long while...until I got better. I have a variety of symptoms; I was deppressed, and I felt fatigued often (but had a hard time sleeping)...Oh and my dr made a comment about how pale I was.

Hope the supplements help!
