Vomitting r/t lactose deficiency...

My dd Mariah is 7 months old and has vomitted almost everyday of her life until recently I did some research on lactose intolerance. I always wrote off the possibility because my husband and me figured if she was lactose intolerant she would vomit every single time she ate, but we didn't realize there are different variations. I did some research on Medicinenet.com (I believe it was this website), and found that it is very common in children with cf and people who have had a small bowel resection. Symptoms can range bloating, pain or cramps, gurgling or rumbling sounds in your belly, gas, loose stools, diarrhea, and throwing up. All of which might lead us to think they need more enzymes. I switched her to a lactose free formula and she has not thrown up since. This was just a god send to us and I just wanted to share this with you guys because I know how hard we fight to get our babies to gain weight. Please let me know if this helps any of you.

As a toddler, my son developed lactose intolerance after to a period of being on antibiotics nearly continually for several months and had symptoms similar to what you describe- very smelly, loose stools/diarrhea, causing a vicious rash, along w/ painful gas and a bloated belly... he was just miserable.

Upon the advice of his pediatrician, we switched him from whole milk to one of the 'toddler formulas' in the soy version, and as with your daughter it was almost an overnight change- within a week his QOL was so much better; his stools returned to normal, the bloating, etc went away... the rash cleared up (that took a little longer to heal.)

I know our CF kids can be on antibiotics so often, so just wanted to bring up the fact that frequent use can kill off the 'good' bacteria that are necessary to digest milk and thus cause lactose intolerance. After a while he was able to slowly be re-introduced to dairy again and did ok with it (I am thinking after about a yr.) Of course, this isn't always the case, and is a bit different than the reason your child has become lactose intolerant, but I thought it might be helpful to mention too.

I am so glad that you've discovered something that has started helping your daughter... I hope that this proves to be a long-term answer for her and she starts putting more weight on now! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
