vx770 and pregnancy

I've wondered about this myself as I hope DD will have children of her own one day. I'm assuming (God-willing!) that there will be a treatment for her along the lines of the Vertex drugs by that time. Unfortunately, the data for safety in utero may not available for quite sometime....

I actually just spoke with my doctors about this very subject today. I will start taking Kalydeco aka VX770 and would like kids down the road so we talked about what that means. Basically since there are no studies the risks outweigh the benefits of taking the drug.

Once pregnant you would stop taking Kalydeco. Unless of course, the benefits of the drug truly outweigh the unknown risks, then that would be quite the conversation between patient and doctor.

However, my doctor informe me that once on the new drug that TTC will become easier since it will thin out cervical mucus considerably.

As we speak there are mothers who are and were trying to get pregnant even before Kalydeco was approved. They will be started on the drug and will have to make up their mind (along with doctor's guidance) if they will stop the drug either before TTC, once they find out they are pregnant, only for 1st tri, for the whole preg or not at all.

Considering it is a Cat B drug I think many will choose to go for it. Please encourage anyone who is preg and on 770 to have their doctor write a paper on the outcome so that we can all learn from the experience.
