Waking up in the morning

Do any of you ever wake up early, not because you've had enough sleep, but because your lungs feel really crummy. A lot of times I'll get up early and do the vest/pulmozyme and go back to sleep. But its the congestion and shortness of breath that wake me up. Sometimes I can hear a crackling like sound, it usually goes away after therapy. This is all really annoying because I neve get more than 7 uninterrupted hours of sleep, unless I'm on IV's.

I have found the the H. Saline somtimes helps if I use it before bed, but not always.

When I wake up in the morning, I'm usually more congested than the rest of the day.

But I don't wake up because I'm congested.....

I'm quite familiar with waking up feeling crummy. But unfortunately, I can't offer much advice, and it normally only happens when I'm sick. As far as the crackling noise bothering you, you could try sleeping with something on in the background, like a low-volume radio or a fan, to drown out that noise.

The older I get the more I notice that mornings are just rough on my lungs. Lately it's been bad b/c of the humidity...I wake up feeling like I haven't breathed for a few hours. Once I'm up for the morning though, it seems like the more moist my sputum gets-though it still feels super crummy. My mornings are usually crappy until I use a few puffs of albuterol for temporary relief or until I use my vest and take a shower. Maybe try using just a puff of albuterol when you wake up early in the morning just to open yourself up a little so you can fall back asleep easier.

I have had a few occasions where I wake up because of difficulty breathing. It usually happens when I am sick though. When I first get up is when my breathing is the worst. I always get my treatment just before I go to bed and then get my treatment first thing after I get up. This usually works for me. Sometimes, I just have to break down and get a treatment if I can't go back to sleep. I always try to just lay there and go back to sleep, but it's a little difficult when your coughing your head off (lol). I also have a crackling sound, but I tend to have that most of the time, not just at bedtime.

I sometimes wake up feeling short of breath, but can't remember waking up just from that. I often wake up feeling someone is sitting on my chest, but after I'm up and moving around, I feel a bit better.

As far as the crackling... I've had and been annoyed by that for YEARS. I usually cannot fall asleep because of it, so I bought a white noise machine that completely drowns that sound out. I LOVE IT!!! I'll post a link to it here if I can find it. I've used it since being a kid.

I remember staring with the crackling sounds after i got cepacia. It would only happen right before i went on iv's then after 2 weeks of iv's it would go away. Well after 9 years with cepacia i get the crackles more often. It reminds me of "Rice Crispies", but drives me crazy ! When i get it repeatedly i use my flutter and it helps me cough up some junk and the sound temporarily goes away. It is usually hard to hear but when i do hear it.... it drives me nuts!

Yeah I wake up earlier than usual because I am coughing and then I fall back to sleep. When I do my AM meds I get alot of junk up and it is brown and gross. Then during the day it is dry to somewhat productive coughs but at night it is so hard to get anything up, nothing like how it is in the AM

I call it 'nap lungs' for me it's especially bad after a few hour nap for some reason. Maybe the lung germs like the lower O2 sats or something. Anyone ever seen an article about this?

Hi,

I hate waking up too, but after (during) 3 hours long morning therapy is everything ok and I can go biking or playing tennis after that... I just need to cought up about 100 ml of brown and green mucus and than begins the nice day...I am little bit tired after that treatment ( 20 ml 7%Hypetronic Saline and 15 ml saline solution 0.9% + 30-40 min huffing and flutter + 2.5 ml Pulmozyme) but after breakfast I feel fine...This really works by me!

I am congested after my naps too. I think it is because we are laying down and all that mucus settles.

I'm alway congested first thing in the am. I think thats the norm for us because we sleep all night and stuff in our lungs just sits. I'm never congested to the point of waking up and having to do physio, but I do notice that I cough throughout the night.

I am always congested in the morning. Though, I am not very successful at getting the worst of the mucus out till I have drunk at least 1-2 liters of water. Things get a little better then.

Some mornings I awake with my mouth/lips sealed shut with dried crusted mucus. I have also awakened with my mouth open and my mouth, tongue and all, dry as a bone.

What can I say, this is what we go through to be able to show others the resilience of the human spirit.

I get so tired of being sick sometimes.

Best,
Grendel

I have had this issue off and on .. expecially more recently in the past 3-4 months. I began to notice I was wheezing more often. I sometimes hear wheezing when I lay down at night. Usually I am able to sit up and get a few good coughs in and clear my airways some and the wheezing stops. If I can't I do a treatment. One thing I have noticed in recent days that has helped is a steroid nasal spray. I had been complaining to my doc about allergies and post nasal drip, I have been taking ClaritinD but was stil having post nasal drip problems. He gave me a script for Flonase and that has helped a ton.

I will add this though. I feel congested every morning when I get up. The VERY first thing I do is my aerosol and vest. By the end of my albuterol treatment I feel a whole heck of a lot better. I also do my treatment at night right before I go to bed and that helps me stay clearer as well. I wake up occasionally in the night coughing, but am normally so tired and groggy that I cough and fall right back asleep.

Yeah this happens to me. I am way congested in the AM. Even through out the night sometimes I wheez and my lungs feel full. The best thing is to just get up and flutter or vest and cough it out. Sometimes hard to to cause I am too tired and do not want to get up so I just suffer and cough, wheez and have a hard time breathing!
