At church yesterday one of Reeces' friends was there with walking pneumonia! (same class) His mother a well educated,in the medical field,& close friend told me he was NOT contagious. Should I be worried? I thought any type of lung infection was to be considered contagious. I am also his sisters' sunday school teacher & she had a wet cough?!? (she is 2) I washed my hands everytime I came in contact with her. Just trying to be realistic.

Here's what I've got on "walking pneumonia":

"When physicians diagnose someone with walking pneumonia, they are usually referring to an infection with an organism called Mycoplasma pneumoniae. (Apart from being a pain, mycoplasmas are kind of cool. They are the smallest self-replicating biologic systems known.) Mycoplasma is a major cause of respiratory infections in school-aged children and young adults. It is most common between the ages of 5 and 15, accounting for 70% of pneumonias in children aged 9 to 15. Mycoplasma can be contagious with close contact. It usually requires prolonged contact to catch the disease. Epidemics have been reported in situations such as summer camps and boarding schools. The disease spreads through breathing air coughed by someone who is infected. Since the cough is often worse at night, people sleeping in the same room are most vulnerable"

I would worry about anyone with viruses and bacteria and consider everyone contageous whether they say they are or not.

My duaghter had it at 5 yrs old and she is a CF patient. We were also told my the cf respirologist that it was not contagious. I find this hard to believe considering that pneumonia seemed to be going around the shool. I kept her home for a week so nobody else would catch it, out of respet to others. I wish they would have done the same.

I had it when I was younger and my doctor said that it was not contagious. Then one of my kids i was teaching had it and her parent assured us that she was not contagious and my new doctor said that she wouldn't be. She still stayed home a couple days but I never got anything from her. I wouldn't worry too much about it because there isn't much you can do now anyway. I think everything will be fine<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

One of my daughter's friends down the street from us had this a few weeks ago. She was on an antibotic. Normally we would try and avoid her, but we had planned on carpooling the girls to day camp that week. I called her cf doctor and he said to be safe Sophia should not be around her. He said her friend's walking pneumonia could be viral or bacterial. The mom said they didn't test her to determine which one so we didn't know. Sophia's doctor said if it had been bacterial Sophia would be fine, but if it was viral, which it probably was then he would avoid contact. So if your friend's doctor determined it was bacterial and she had been on antibotics then she wouldn't be contagious as far as I understand. But they probably didn't go that far. Praying Reece will be fine. My kids seem to be exposed to things quite a bit and they usually stay well.

DS's great-aunt had pneumonia around Christmas, so we were a little concerned even though we too were told she wasn't contagious. We asked our doctor and he said to avoid her if she was coughing -- don't share food, kissing -- do the frequent handwashing... By the time we saw her on Xmas it had been a week since she had been diagnosed and she wasn't coughing anymore and she did keep her distance in any event. Plus hers was bacterial and she had been on antibiotics for over a week. Viruses are what really make me edgy.

And when someone tells me they aren't contagious, but are still coughing, especially with a productive cough, I always think "well, ds cultures pseudo and he's not contagious to normal healthy individuals, but could be contagious to others."

Hi, I have a 3 year old daughter with CF. I had walking pneumonia this past Januarary, and I did everything to try and stay away from close contact with my daughter, but she still caught it and was in the hospital for three weeks. Her doctor said this was very contagious. He said that she was really lucky not to have to stay longer because he had seen a lot of people that did not have CF get put in ICU. I know that when I had it I felt so bad that I thought I was going to pass out. I could not even begin to imagine how my daughter felt. If this was me I would avoid contact as much as possible.
