weight gain after transplant

Hey everybody,
I was just wondering how much weight everyone put on after transplant. My docs are saying that immediately after surgery I am going to have a feeding tube, but that within a year they are going to be telling me to watch my weight. I have to confess, I am little anxious about gaining alot of weight. Plus I am worried about getting the "moon face" from the prednisone, do most people get this?

Hey Fallon,

Before my transplant I was 78 pounds. I lost 5 pounds dropping me to 72 pounds. Now, five years post transplant, I weigh a healhty 98-100 pounds. Most of this is lean muscle as I make sure to work out a lot. I'm 4'11" and was grossly underweight for my age and height. Now I am right where I should be. I ditched the feeding tube around 3 weeks after my transplant. I wasn't using it anymore and I didn't need it. I still eat whatever I want, I do have diabetes, and if I get a cold I still drop weight too quickly. The difference post transplant is, without your lungs fighting all of those infections and struggling just to breathe, you aren't burning as many calories. So the calories you are eating seem to stretch further. I still don't have to watch my weight, but I'm at a healthy weight now.

As far as moon face, I think it happens to everyone in the beginning. I would say my moon face was significantly reduced after a year, and "normal" by two years. I still am on 10 mgs of prednisone and sometimes I notice my cheeks a bit, but it has just made my face more full and healthy looking.

Hope this helps.

When I went in for my transplant I weighed 117lbs (after gaining 10 lbs in the weeks I was listed). When I left the hospital post transplant I weighed 105lbs. I am 5'7" so I was extremely small and underweight. I am 2.5 yrs post and now I weigh about 135-140 depending on the day. I am about 5 lbs over what I am supposed to weigh for my height but am working out so it seems for the most part to be kind of deceiving because I do not look like I weigh that much to friends and family.

I did not start gaining weight back until I was about 4 months post transplant. I have never had a feeding tube so that may have something to do with it I am not sure.

As for the moon face for me it seems to have gotten more pronounced as time has passed since transplant initially you couldn't tell I was taking anything, and now I have a pudgy face when I smile and such. I also have noticed that some days seem worse than others where I seem more full faced.

Fallon,
I did not have a feeding tube after my double lung and liver transplant. I am 5'9" and I weighed 113 pounds before transplant and was extremely thin. I had a little trouble gaining some weight post Tx with having my large intestine removed, but once the ileostomy was reversed and things were 'back to normal' I started gaining weight.

I am 2 years and 8 months post transplant and I now weigh about 150 pounds. I think that I look very healthy at this weight and yes, I have a little bit of a moon face but I don't think it's that bad. Some people get it worse than others, depending on how much prednisone you are on afterward. I was on very high doses at first and am down to 5mg a day now.
