Just wondering if its just me or if every woman with cf struggles to gain weight when pregnant??

Im going into 19 weeks and have gained 1 pound!!! I eat all the time and have been taking my enzymes with everything that crosses my lips. Its so frustrating! The good new is that the baby is growing and doing fine. But my lungs are not doing so good. Ive already been put on 2 different antibiotics in the last month and a 1/2. Oral ones for 10 days at a time. which helps while im on them but as soon as im off im back to where i started!! UGH! I'm quitting my job so that i can stay home and eat all day long, my last day is friday.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi Teri,

I also had a hard time gaining weight in pregnancy. I didn't really gain until the third trimester. They set a goal for me to gain 15 lbs during the pregnancy but I only gained 12 lbs. The baby weighed 8 lbs 6 oz at birth. So naturally my weight went down quite a bit (17 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight) after the birth. But now I've gained that back and even a few pounds more. I'm now at my heaviest ever at 187 lbs (yikes!). But it's always good to have extra weight, right? But really, I think it's a problem for a lot of CF women to gain weight. I drank a lot of Carnation instant breakfasts with whole milk and I ate several times a day. It's hard to eat when you're not feeling up to it either...I was really nauseas in my first trimester and lost about 6 lbs in those 3 months. So my advice is to try your hardest to gain the weight; all you can do is try. It's definitely hard, but keep shoving those calories in you and you'll probably see more of a difference at the end of the pregnancy. Take care.

Hi there, I'm afraid I've never been pregnant so can't help with that side of things, however in the past I have struggled to gain weight due to my CF and I found a solution that may help you.

Here in the UK our dieticians at clinic can prescribe something called "Polycal" or "Maxijul" (different brand names - they may be different in the US). It is basically a powder that has absolutely no taste (trust me!) but which is neat calories. You can put it into drinks, soups, stews, even scrambled eggs! I started putting it in loads of my food and drinks when I was underweight and I managed to gain 12 pounds in a couple of months! Shame you live so far away as I have a huge box of it here that I don't need anymore and could have sent it to you! Anyway, good luck and I hope things pick up for you x

I bumped a bunch of threads about this topic for you. Enjoy! 2nd trimester is the time to gain because 3rd trimester you may be uncomfortable if the baby is pushing up on your belly and ribcage. This wasn't the case for me since I'm long torsoed maybe?!
