weird tongue/mouth thing happening with me (off topic?)

this may end up to be an off-topic question depending on what you guys think.

yesterday i was brushing my tongue and it bled slightly--very weird. then i notice some little marks on the roof of my mouth. freaked me out. today i realized that for the last two days my sense of taste has also been altered--not sure exactly how.

my first thought was, could this have had something to do with me coming OFF the antibiotics?? secondly, i've been reading a lot online and altered taste can be a complication of diabetics but i kind of doubt that's what it is. (did you know there is a mucus covering to our tongues? supposedly if something goes wrong with that it can alter taste--anyone have any experiences with this?) and then there is the smell issue to consider since they are so closely linked--but again i just can't think of why this would apply to me now.

ideas?

Thrush from being on antibiotics? Are the marks white?

Some meds can leave a weird taste in your mouth. I was on biaxin (oral) for pneumonia years ago and everything I tasted was metallic tasting.

My first thoughts were thrush also.

When I get thrush my tongue is usually VERY sensitive especially towards the back of my tongue - near my throat. I have never had bleeding though.

I also have altered taste when I have thrush.

I usually do NOT get the spots on my mouth, but I know that is common with thrush.

Also I get a very sore throat and it is uncomfy to swallow.

I would call and ask the doc about it. If it is thrush it will probably get worse if you don't take something for it. I sometimes lose my voice with thrush too - if I don't pick up on what is happening and let it go for a few days.

I hope it starts to get better.

Take Care,
Lindsey

no whiteness at all, no sore throat. and the sensation isn't toward the back of my tongue; it seems uniformally spread out. when it bled it was from specific little places that looked like tiny sores almost--like head of a pin tiny. and besides, why would this pop up AFTER i'm off the medicine? isn't it more likely to happen when i'm on the abx if it was thrush? and what about the other spots on the roof (soft part in back) of my mouth that are dark and look almost blood shot? that wouldn't accompany thrush, would it?

thanks for the input so far--

Laura...

Weird! I get those same markings on my roof from time to time! They're so weird... they deff. look bloodshot! Exactly like you described! I get them maybe every other month or two and they just stick around and then disappear on their own with me doing nothing. I have no idea what they are. I don't think they effect my taste, but I guess I've never noticed. I just don't pay them mind since they disappear after a few days on their own.

And, I always always always have a white "film" on most of my tongue. It doesn't seem to do much either. I've had it for years. I don't think its thrush cause, left untreated, thrush will usually spread to throat and sides of mouth, and mine never does. Plus, doc have looked in there and never comment so they must think its normal. Perhaps its the mucus you mentioned?!?

As far as the bleeding. I've not had that... although I have geographic tongue... which leave patches on my tongue and really is just a freak thing. I have had those spots get extremely sensitive and almost bloody when I eat something really sour or salty or something. Do you have geographic tongue?

Hope you get your tastebuds back soon!!

sonia, i remember you posting about the white film before and everyone saying it was thrush and you saying it was not. my taste buds feel a little more normal as the day goes on, but still something's not quite right. if worst comes to worst (and if it doesn't GET worse) i have a dr appt next week, so i'll have him check it out if its still there.
