What about playgroups/classes for our little ones?

Hello

I am really new to all of this. My son Eli who is almost 1 yr
old was just dx two weeks ago. Before he was dx I used to
take him to a playgroup once a week with about 4 or 5 other moms
and their babies. We were very lax about letting the kids
play with toys that the other had played with. It was very
common for one child to stick something in their mouth and the next
thing you know another child has the same thing in their mouth.

I just wonder if I should still be a part of this group. If I
do go back, what kind of precautions do I have to take. I'd
hate to be the mom always sanitizing everything. I also worry
about when it's my turn to host it at my house and there are lots
of babies handling Eli's toys.

How do other parents of children with CF handled this?

(Eli was also taking a music class with similar issues)

Thanks very much
Sarah, I'm sorta in the same boat as you are... just figuring this
whole thing out. I think you need to let your son be a kid,
and that may mean some germs. So far, I have asked the other
moms in our playgroup to let me know if their kids are showing cold
symptoms, and when they do I bow out. I bring my dd her own
toys to chomp on, and use a whole lot of Purell. I just
figure there has got to be a good balance between caution and
allowing our kids to have as normal of a childhood as possible.

Hi Sarah,
you're probably on information overload right now, but the best you
can do for Eli is to learn as much info about CF and raise him to
be a happy healthy young man. When my son was very young he
was watched by relatives but was around other kids at church and
friends and relatives houses. I guess I have always been a
little lax, but your right, just thinking about all that slobber
that gets on kids toys. When he was 3 he went to preschool
and got his share of colds and strep, but that is going to happen.
A year is young but before u know it he will be starting
kindergarten.. It's really something u will just have to
figure out what u are comfortable with, just place a lot of focus
on nutrition to keep his immune system up and love him everyday for
the gift that he is. The main thing I have avoided completely
is smoke. YUCK!. I would never even take him into a
restaurant where smoking was done in, like the wing place or
bowling alley.
Heather's got a good way of looking at it...kids will be kids, no time like the present to develop an immune system...jsut take precautions, and enjoy.

I say go to the playgroup, it will be good for your son as well as you. Yes, now you will be a bit more paranoid about him sharing toys, but try not to let it bother you. I had the same reservations as you did a few years ago. What I decided was that I needed friends and so did my kids. We have never regretted doing playgroups, swim lessons, ballet, preschool, etc. My kids hardly ever come down with colds. My daughter actually caught the most colds her first year of life when I hardly took her anywhere. My kids usually just bounce back quickly from a cold when they do come down with one. They have to go out in the world sometime.

DS has been going to daycare/preschool since he was 3 months old. The center he goes to is good about sanitizing things, making everyone aware if a child comes down with something -- still -- group of kids who are going to spread their germs and happiness. We figure eventually DS will be going to school and exposed to germs there, too.

One of my coworkers refuses to let her child play at fast food playgrounds or the indoor park at the mall. I'm not comfortable about it, but once in awhile DS goes, but I wipe his hands down with antibacterial wipes and he gets a bath when we get home. Shopping carts, I always wipe down with the wipes they provide at the store and wipe off hands when we get out to the car.

I'm more worried about holidays when people show up sick or bring their sick kids. Apparently if you're related, it's okay to come to dinner with pneumonia, stomach flu, bronchitis....

Thanks everyone.
I think that I will continue to bring Eli to the playgroup. I
do need friends and other mommy support and so does Eli. and
I do want him to feel as 'normal' as possible.

Do you all do anything extra to help your child's immunity?

We were prescribed a vitamin supplement that he will start taking
twice a day once he's one. Any other tricks to keep em'
healthy?

Nice to meet you all btw. You all sounds like great
