what could this be?

i got home from work today after i'd had the feeling like "i can't wait to do therapy after work" because i'd been tight in this one area all day. i did a really big cleansing cough and there was blood. this is very unusual for me. every time i have EVER coughed up blood it has always been the night or morning after being in a smokey bar or just a tiny streak, what i thought was a busted capillary.

this was different. since this afternoon, my sputum has mostly been pink/brownish with some just yellow and some with more obvious red blood in it. i was thinking the pink stuff could be dried blood? anyway, i paged my doctor b/c i wanted to do my vest so badly to relieve my chest tightness but i thought that might not be a good idea if i was bleeding. he didn't call me back. a little while later when my symptoms didn't get worse, i did my vest and saline (more diluted than usual) and it was no different than before. and my tightness improved a little.

i know hemoptosis is often caused by infection. but i really see no signs of infection. i have been feeling fine. (i literally climbed the peak of a mountain 3 days ago.) is there any way the bleeding could be related to the tightness? i was thinking the tightness might be a mucus plug--although the pain is more dull than sharp like it usually is with that--but that wouldn't cause bleeding, would it?

just wondered if you guys had anything to say about what might be going on.

thanks!

i often see no signs of infection (no shortness of breath, increased sputum, increased cough, or elevated white blood cell count) but bleeding can be an early sign of infection for me. everyone is different. i bet i would start feeling the above symptoms if i let the infection progress. bleeding, believe it or not, is an early sign of infection for me.

i'm 25, though, and this has really only been the case over the past 2 years.

I agree with Sakasuka. Bleeding for me is a sign of early infection and that is how my doctor treats it if it is more than streaking.

I dont know what its like for you, but IF it was me. That climb of the mountain peak would be catching up with me. Physical strain (even if I dont think it is) is the trigger as of late for me. There often is no rhyme or reason to the bleeds. I am battling it at the moment trying to get down for a checkup. The road trip alone could take its toll on me. Good Luck!

i got to talk to my doctor today. he wan't overly concerned but was glad i let him know and told me to keep an eye on things.

he did think the chest tightness and the bleeding were probably related--he said the blood gets into the small airways, and they can sometimes get irritated before it makes its way to the larger airways to be coughed up. he seemed to think the bleed could have been caused by exertion.

also, last night when i was recording the day's events in my medical journal, i realized i have had some other symptoms the last few weeks. most notably i have had some (3-4) low-grade fevers. last night it was 99 (i usually run 97.5) had flushed cheeks and realized there were a few other times my cheeks had gotten flushed like that where i might have had a touch of a fever.

also, malaise. for those who don't know (i didn't know there was a word for it until last night) it is body soreness or discomfort, like the feeling you get when you are coming down with the flu. almost like your skin is sore. that has been better and worse the last few weeks. it seems to be stress and sleep related, somewhat.

in addition to that i have had a few headaches that came on and then quickly dissipated; my appetite might be slightly down also.

thanks for your insight, everyone!
