What do you all think about stem cell research and CF?

Hey all,

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on this topic. Today on a local show called 9am, there was a professor Bob Williamson discussing CORD BLOOD (STEM CELLS) and related them to CF. Ther was even a dad on the show witha 6yr old daughter with CF.
They just had a baby wo/cf and decided to keep his cord blood, for their daughter with CF, incase it was needed. This professor highly recommended it as he thinks there will be something positve happening with stem cells very soon. He mentioned a variety of other disorders that it will treat/cure.

I need to resaerch this further, but can anyone enlighten me on how this will help CF'ers, in the future.

I've always thought that one day they would be able to grow people new organs.

Take my DNA, repair my defective CF genes (well, they would actually only need to do one) and grow me a new set of lungs.

Lung transplant would be the last part.

It's science fiction as of now, but much of medicine today was science fiction of yester-year.

Hey guy's,

I guess many of you don't seem too interested, but anyway i just found the CFW site in regards to Prof Williamson, stem cells and CF and thought you might want to check it out.

Please take some time to have a look at it and tell me what you think.

Thanks Eli

I am really interested in this, but I have a limited knowledge of all the science involved and feel rather ignorant. Thanks for the link, education is power.

I went to a seminar in Melbourne held by Prof Bob Williamson about this topic - it is really promising. From what I believe they are looking at using the cord blood from another pregnancy to correct the lung function in the child with CF. A company called BioCell in Australia have agreed to store the cord blood from another pregnancy in all families with a child with CF for free indefinitely until further research is completed and they have a better idea whether it will be successful - they are really positive though and apparently will know more in 1-2 years. They have had some great success with mice etc but still a huge amount of research needs to be done to make sure the procedures work, are safe etc etc. I think you need to get a 100% match in terms of blood type/DNA with the next pregnancy to the child with CF and if you decide to go through IVF, Bob Williamson will instruct the IVF clinic as to how to do this. I am not 100% certain on this part though and can't go into all the science about the topic but if you are thinking about having another child, from what they discussed at this seminar, i would definitely be storing your cord blood.

I am very interested in all of the various stem cell projects - and fully support them.
I don't look to them to give helpful results any time soon (say the next 10 years) tho'. Heck with development costs and testing time, it took my ex over 15 years to get a cancer drug (based on ancient work with diptheria) from his lab bench to pharmacy shelves.

mmmmmmm.............interesting, thanks for the link!

I too heard something along the lines of stem cells, but not to do with CF. It seems promising.

I am all for stem cell research. If all these religious and other groups had family members that had CF and othe diseases, they would be all for it too.

not necessarily. my parents don't believe in stem cell research. I'm dead serious.... it's bizarre
