Hi, I have an infant and a 4 year old, both with CF. What are some ideas for sanitizing household items and toys. We use hand sanitizer for hands. Can I use bleach and water? I have never cleaned/sanitized things and I am in need of some ideas to make it easy and yet healthy for them. BTW 4 year old is starting school soon.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions!

If the item seems like it won't be rusted or get water stuck permanently inside it, we wash in soap and water; some things we use disinfecting wipes; some things we spray with lysol or a clorox disinfecting spray (in a well ventilated place other than the playroom). The play room in the local CF hospital uses these methods.
By the way toothbrushes are another thing to think about keeping clean - the normal thing of using it and letting it sit in the bathroom is (in my opinion) just asking for something icky to start growing there: we don't let our CF child's toothbrush sit around for daily use - we've got about a dozen of them at any one time and after being used they get set aside to be washed/microwaved or soaked in hydrogen peroxide.

Since my dd has began playing with toys, I wash them in a bleach and water solution. If you get on clorox.com in gives you a recipe for sanitizing toys. i do 3/4 cup bleach to 4 liters of water because I have a tub that has liters on it. I scrub almost all of her toys with a dish brush and then I let them sit for about five minutes while I am doing something else. I then rinse them and lay them out to dry. Anything like a stuffed animal she plays with I wash in the wash machine. If it can't be washed, I throw it away. Now that she is crawling, I don't allow shoes in the house and I try to keep the floor as clean as possible. Can't keep all of the germs away but we can sure try.

we just recently ordered an advent iq24 to help with sterilizing neb supplies and a uv toothbrush sterilizer. we don't have them yet, but they look like pretty good methods. especially when you use multiple neb cups at each sitting. for the other toys and such, we use lysol and disinfecting wipes. Don't forget the door knobs <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">.
