what is a normal sweat test

Less than 40 is considered negative, 40-59 borderline and warrants further testing, 60 or above is positive. However, although rare, there have been MANY cases of people with borderline sweat tests and even negative sweat tests who have 2 genes and therefore do have CF. Generally speaking though a value in the teens or lower is almost always considered negative. (Assuming of course the child was old enough, there was enough sweat collected, and the test was performed at an accredited cf lab.)

My daughters sweat test was 68, which is over borderline but not that high. Some peoples salt levels reach 200+.

The previous poster is correct:

Below 40 is considered normal
41-60 considered borderline
61 and above considered positive

My kids are one of those exceptions to the rule.....

My kids have genetic testing showing two CF Genes
Delta F 505
R117H

My daughters sweat test is 38
My son's sweat test is 41

If you have any question at all that your child might have CF -- please get the full genetic testing !!!

My kids did not show a lot of 'classic CF' sypmtoms and were therfore misdiagnosed until they were in their teens -- my daughter was sweat tested 3 times when she was 5 years old and we were told she did not have CF -- she went for 8 more years thinking she had only asthma and we did not get antibiotics for her lung infections because we were told it was 'asthma with productive cough' -- we didn't know what CPT was and therefore never did it! Only after the genetic testing did we know what we were dealing with and they got the correct care and treatment.

fyi - The sweat test has an accuracy of 85%. If one or more symptoms are present with a negative or borderline sweat test it would be wise to have a genetic test done.
