What is Meconium Ileas?

Hi I apoligize that I really don't know what meconium ileas is. I see a lot of talk about it, but really don't understand what it is.
I am an adult w/ CF and I assume that I had this as a child, but don't remember my mother talking about it. Maybe back then it didn't have a name, who knows?

Well I'm reaching for 21 with CF and I had it when I was 2 days old. The meconium is the plug that babies have when they're born. Their first bowel movement, only it's not normal. The meconium ileus is when after the baby is born, they don't pass this plug. 2 days had gone by since I was born, and I still hadn't passed mine. They tried everything, apparently, including several enemas. So then they went in surgically, and removed it. That was my experience with it, anyway. I'm sure many are different. But that's basically what it is.

Same thing here. I had meconium ileus at birth too. The meconium is EXTRA thick in babies with CF so it tends to get stuck and cause a blockage (just like everything else is extra thick w/CF) So babies with CF have a tendency to have this problem. I had the same surgery as Emily at two days old.

Hey Emily,

I just read on another thread that you go to Northeastern Univ? I work at Brigham and Womens hospital---right down the street from you!! I pass NU everyday on my way to work! Pretty cool, we are neighbors!!

Meconium illeus only happens to about 10-15% of those with cf.
Sharon, mom to Sophia, 3 and Jack, 1 both with cf

Another statistic- once you've had a CF baby with meconium ileus, the likelihood that in another CF pregancy the baby will have meconium ileus jumps from 10-15% (like Sharon said) to 30%

aaA couple more statistics.....
We were told when Emily was born that 10% of babies who are eventually diagnosed with CF present with Meconium Ileus. 97% of babies born with Meconium Ileus have CF and I have to wonder what the other 3% is.
