What' s an exacerbation?

I have hard it mentioned a few times recently, and i don't know what it means. Can someone please explain it to me.

Basically it is a flare up where things go haywire &/or an infection kicks in!

Your lungs are irritated with an infection. Sometimes it can just be a flairup that is easy to treat (doing an extra treatment), sometimes it leads to more serious infection.

Why they are bad? Leads to the production of more mucus to fight the irritation and/or infection, which just compounds the problem.

Symptons of exacerbation also can include coughing up a thick (hard) sticky mucus. Sometimes it looks like your coughing up little mucus rolls (hard shaped tubes) or big hard mucus clumps (similar to dried nose mucus)
