I am curious to know everyones story about their PFTs.

What the lowest your pft's have been?
How high did you get it back up to?
How did you do it?
How long did or has it stayed up?

Im mainly wondering if its possible to get your pft's higher if they have been down for a couple of years. I have heard of others getting their pft's up but I would like to hear more stories. So please post your success stories.

My pft's have been in the high 50's for a few years now and I would like to get it back up.
I am not hoping for a complete miracle but would like to at least get them up some. I have not been completely compliant with my breathing treatments because I have had massive hemoptysis in the past and the treatments seems to mae it worse. So I have not been compliant out of fear.

My last clinic appt my Dr suggested that I get a routine going with my treatments before I consider having a child.
So I am now starting slowly with my treatments to try to get over the mental fear that I have had about hemoptysis. I came very close to losing my life because of hemoraging before they finally decided to take out the lobe that was hemoraging.

My fear is real, but I feel with a little time I can get over it. But the fear of making it worse again is real with me.
So I am just looking for some of your stories to help me get the courage to keep it up with the knowledge that it really will help and not just hurt me.

Thanks for your encouragement!!!

Couple of years, not a clue. I was once down as low as 44%. But that was due to my getting MRSA. Immediately after, I went on IVs, and the PFTs popped right back up to high 80s. Since then, they've gone down slowly. I've been around 70% for 2-3 years now.

I know people have spoken before about going on exercise regimes and getting their PFTs up pretty high (like 10% higher than their base).

Khristina,

I just wanted to say good luck and I hope that you work out the fear issues, etc. My husband has a lot of bleeding (causing 7 PAEs, etc.), and I know that he worries about doing some of the treatments that might cause bleeding. He too is starting back with things and trying to see if he can get his PFTs back up. His eflow actually arrived on Friday, so he is going to be giving that a whirl and will be fitted for a vest at his next clinic appointment. So, we are going to see how that goes. So, I guess I just wanted to say that you are not alone in your situation and I will be thinking about you!

Take care,

Lisa

i dawdled in the low to mid sixties for years while under the care of a county pulmonologist. i got all the way down to 42 by the time i was able to get seen at a cf center. after two weeks in the hospital, i bounced up to 78. since then i've dropped as low as 54 and recently pft'd at 72.

i attribute the fluxuation to bad habits dying hard; and the 72 is attributed to better diet, slightly more excercise, regular cpt, and hypertonic.
