Hi everyone

Just have a question for you all. As you know I have posted on this site before and at times you have been very helpful. Ben has caught his first cold and i am very nervous as some of you may know I have older children 13 and 14 and now i have ben with CF. I have had him to A & E once this week had a temp and I knew something was off as he only came out of hospital bout 6 weeks ago with a gastro. Got his chest checked and he was fine. The next day he was coughing all day and had a clear runny nose. So anyways called the doctor again and he said his chest was clear. For the last 2 days he has been wheezing alot and coughing I have upped his physio to 4 times a day I don`t know if this helps. He seems to be worse in the afternoon. Has anyone else had this problem? He has always had a slight wheeze since birth but the CF clinic assure me everything is fine. Only saw the doctor yesterday and I try not to panic but it can be really hard when I think something is not right and then i am told that it is. If that makes sense. Sorry so long.

Hi Donna, all i can say is if you just saw the doc yesterday and they said he was fine than don't worry yourself sick.
You need to have faith in the doc's. I know how you feel, i was alway's stressing about mu daughter who is now 18 months, but i have learned to relax and calm down.
She too has a moist cough, which is persistent mostly in the mornings and the docs have assured me she is fine. We just have to have faith and trust in them.

I'll add my sympathies too - my 3 year old has had a wet cough lately but sounds clear when breathing so we're nervous about what's going on in there even though the Dr.s keep giving him an "all clear" on his lungs.

Have you thought about the possibility of allergy-type causes for the runny nose/cough/wheeze? Around our house we've got lots of trees and when they're doing their pollen thing all of us get a drip/cough until they're done

I also believe you need to trust your doctors opinion but I also think you are his mom and you know him better than anyone. If you dont think all is fine than please persist with the docs. Did they put him on anitbiotics or any other inhaled meds? I dont wont to scare you but I do want to tell you that when my son was 11 months old he got his first real cold...was coughing, fever, runny nose and eyes. So on Friday afternoon I took him to the cf clinic and his regular doctor saw him. He checked him over and gave him an albuterol treatment in the office. Well since he seemed to perk up after the treatment he let us go home....by Sunday night we were at the E.R. where they admitted him to the ICU and he stayed on a ventilator for 10 days. He just got so sick so fast. I just want you to know our story because I dont want that to happen to anyone else. But please remember that this is not a typical story. He has never again been that sick and he is now 2 1/2 years old and doing wonderful! But when he starts coughing or I think he starting to get sick I act fast. I start chest pt every four hours with albuterol and I call the doctors for antibiotics and maybe steroids (if he gets to coughing a whole lot). So just remember the doctors are great but sometimes mother knows best! If you feel he is truly getting sick persist with the doctors.

When ever my son starts to cough - they put him on an antibiotic - and it clears him up. We always do pt and albuterol treatments daily - up them when sick. I hope they put him on an antibiotic. My son usually only has to be on them 1-3 times a year. I think it helps to catch it early and nip it in the butt. At least that's what always works for us. My son has never had the wheezing or constant cough.
But he does have polyps and some allergy problems.

i would have to disagree strongly about blindly trusting docs.

they are a great resource and they've studied for years and they have a great deal of experience.....but they're not perfect.

Wheezing is a sign of either airway inflammation or increased mucus in the airways. Either way - it should be taken care of.

1. you said you were doing increased physio. is that accompanied by increased brochodialator (Xoponex or Albuterol)? This can help to open up the lungs and decrease wheezing

2. you said you son has a cold. how many days has he had the cold? viruses take 7-10 days to resolve. so you may just have to hold on until the 10 days is up. if, after 10 days of the cold, your son is still wheezing, I would be very vocal with the doc about antibiotics or a steroid to decrease inflammation.

3. Are you sure it's a cold? Many people mistake colds for allergies. And allergies can cause wheezing that rarely resolves without an anti-histamine and allergy avoidence. This was my case when I was 9 and developed allergies. Doc kept trying to treat for CF, when my wheezing and coughing so hard that I threw up was due to my cat at home, the dust mites in my bed, and the horses I rode every day. Once I got rid of the triggers and took an anti-histamine, the wheezing went away.

Keep us posted on how things go.

Even before DS left the NICU at 4 weeks old, he started to cough and a couple of times the RTs had to suction out a lot of yellow boogies from his nose. I kept mentioning the cough, was told by one doctor it was reflux. He was still coughing at 2 months old, but it was worse -- he'd cough so hard he'd hurl his formula up and I'd have to hold him over the kitchen sink or basement floor drain. It didn't affect his sleeping, he didn't cough at night. I took him in for his 2 month shots and asked the local cf doctor about it. His response was "cfers cough". My husband and I argued for a month about this -- the doctor told us he was fine, get over it!

Had a recheck with the CF doctor in the City at 3 months and he YELLED at us. Told us didn't we know DS had bronchitis? He could've ended up back in the hospital!!! Turns out he came home with a bug that is common in NICUs caused by improper had washing. Was prescribed an antibiotic -- septra I think and was good as new in a couple of days.

When DS was about 7 months old he developed a wheeze and would cough once in awhile. I took him in and the doctor said his lungs sounded normal. Later at the next CF appointment in the City I mentioned to the doctor that in both instances the doctors told me his lungs sounded clear. Doctor's response was to learn to know our child's cough (if he has one). Most doctors aren't familiar enough with CF to know what to listen to. With the wheeze it was a virus, upper respiratory bug, so we increased his beatings and I would give him a couple of warm steamy baths to get things moving.

If you think something's wrong, keep pushing until you get answers. L

Hi Guys
I do believe he has a cold as it has gone around the whole family except me (thank God) and he is on antibiotics has been for about 4 days. I think there is a slight improvement today but still coughing wheezing and throwing up. I have only been told to do extra physio not with anything. I`m from Australia and I think things are done a bit different here. Anyways gonna go put my patient pants on and change him for the 7th time this morning and it`s only 8.30am. Thanks guys for your help will keep u posted.
