When Do You Give Enzymes???

I have been reading some of the posts on here regarding enzymes and when they are given. Who all takes them before meals and who takes them after meals? I give them to my son before meals and snacks. This is what I was told to do when he was diagnosed and we were getting "cf educated". Just wondering about everyone else!! Thanks

You are supposed to take them before meals, but I've been told by many doctors that you have up until an hour after eating to take enzymes, if you've forgotten to, or your child is having a hard time taking them i.e. put them in his desert.

I too have been told that enzymes after a meal works fine. In my own personal experience, that is not true. I have to take my enzymes before I eat (or maybe during), or I might as well not take them at all. That may just be me, like I said, but if you can get him to take them before the meal, that's what I personally would recommend. My mom always used to put them in apple sauce, and I had a little bit of apple sauce before every meal.

I asked my doc about that before because I am notorious for forgetting and taking them after meals - at least I have been in the past. He said you CAN take them after but they are most effective if taken with the first bite of food. I usually try to take them with the first bite or while I am eating.

I take them beforehand otherwise I forget. I will take some during if I end up having a lengthy or extra fatty meal! The doctor never has said whats best one way or the other. I do know they ask for the CFF statistics at my visits, but not regarding my care itself!

Enzymes are usually good for an hour. Warwick claims the best way to make them most effective is to take the smallest dose of enzyme capsules and take them throughout the meal. Having said that, we don't do that. Our son needs them at the beginning of the meal otherwise the food is through him in a few minutes. We will give him more if he eats again after an hour.

Aidan takes about 30 Creon pills a day right now and he is not yet two. Warwick said we know he is getting the appropriate amount if he has 1-2 BMs daily that sink and is gaining weight...

Jadens takes 5 Pancrecarb Ms-4 capsules and we give two at the start of her meal and then the three when she is done usually she finishes her milk after those. We were having poopy issues and since doing that they have been good.

We give DS his right before his first bite for regular meals or a snack. When he was first diagnosed, he'd fall asleep when we'd be giving him his bottle, so we wanted to make sure all the little enzyme beads got washed down.

If DS starts snacking on something and becomes a really big eater, then I usually hand him an enzyme or two with something to drink.
