Hi everyone! I am just wondering who you guys call when something goes wrong. We are new to CF and to the doctor. My son has a really strange cough that seems really tight! We have done extra vest treatments and have not missed any of the regular stuff. Just can seem to loosen it up. I left a message with the CF center but they haven't called back! Any advice would be great! Hope everyone is doing well!

Call again, and again, and again. Make enough noise that they call back, if for no other reason than to shut you up.

Does your son have a strong asthma component? A "tight" cough is sometimes caused by asthma or by allergies. Although, it could be any number of things. The fact is though, that a "new" symptom should be checked out. I hope it's easily handled. Let us know what they say.

Edited to answer your original question. You are right to call the CF center on this one. In fact, we call the CF doc for most things, because even the run of the mill illnesses are different for people with CF.

Unless it is an issue that is quite clearly not related to CF or going to affect the CF (muscular, teeth, lice, etc.), we call CF. Our CF nurse told me when in doubt to call her first. She could always tell us to call the pedi.

So yes, with a tight cough that hasn't responded to increased treatments for more than 5 days, requires a CF call.

Thanks all! Yeah I will just keep calling. He does not have asthma. Actually it sounds very similar to coughs he has had in the past when it turned out to be pneumonia!! It is a productive cough. Last night he coughed up a whole bowl full of thick icky green mucus! Gross I know. This morning it seemend like he was trying to get it up again but it was stuck. Maybe I don't know!?! As far as the allergies. He has been tested and tested for everything under the sun in that department. Everything came back negative. I am thinking they might have to have him come in for a culture. They definitely will be able to get a sputum sample this time. Last time they only did a throat swab. Thanks for the advice. I am learning not to be so afraid of the CF doc anymore. LOL!

In the beginning my husband had to remind me that "we're the customers", that we're paying for appointments. This was when I'd take DS to the regular peds clinic and get told, "it's just a virus, they cough it's what they do, it's not contagious (when I've been sick).

I tend to call the CF clinic as well. Don't worry about offending, these are your child's lungs we're talking about. BTW, I'd be tempted to offer to bring in that bowl of mucus as a sample -- except in my case mucus really grosses me out and it'd make me dry heave if I attempted to do so.

I hope you have heard from your clinic nurse by now. Since you are new to all of this one of the key things to ask them, may be about their protocol when addressing phone calls.

Will you most likely get a voicemail?

Do they check for messages fequently?

When can you expect a call back? End of the day or the next day?

Is there a seperate number to call if you feel the matter is urgent but not 911 urgent?

We have been to many different clinics over the years (my girls are older and we are military so we've moved alot)and they are all different when it comes to phone calls and whether they work as a team or you see just one doctor. We personally like the team approach. If the doc they normally see isn't around or available there are a few other docs and a NP to check with after talking to the nurse about what is going on.

I hope your son feels better soon.

I call the CF center first and if they don't get back to me in enough time, I call her pediatrician, then I call the CF center back to let them know I called the pediatrician. Usually the CF center gets back to me within 24 hours though.
