Hey, everyone!

It seems there are an awful lot of us sick on IVs (either inpatient or outpatient) right now, so was just curious if you're on IVs right now and, if so, just curious:

What are you on?

How long have you been on it?

Does it seem to be working?

Have you suffered any side effects, and if so, care to share?

Are you at home or in the hospital?

What are you doing while you're on IVs?

I will answer these questions in a reply since I'm on them now too.

I've been on IV Zosyn since January 23rd. Oh my gosh, that's a long time! The day before my 400th We changed some things almost 2 weeks ago. Added inhaled Tobi and Levoquin. I think the first two weeks were kind of a bust. So, I have insisted on continuing and will probably stop next Friday. Minimal side effects, some tummy stuff. IV Tobra and me are no longer friends. My ears don't like it and my docs are very protective of my ears, I appreciate that. With my persistence in finding a good combination, my numbers are rockin in the right direction!!!! I feel really good, hiked a mile in the cold a few days ago and found it invigorating. My best to all of you who have willingly or unwillingly joined the "ever popular" IV CLUB!

What are you on?
The couch mostly. Oh! You meant medication-wise. I'm on Merrem, and just stopped Tobramycin. Tonight I'm supposed to be starting Colymycin.

How long have you been on it?
Since the 7th of Feb.

Does it seem to be working?
Yes. I only had one bug to fight this time (cepacia but no PA!) so my FEV1 came up nicely. Still has a ways to go though. Another good sign is that my weight has climbed up to 117.

Have you suffered any side effects, and if so, care to share?
Well, there's the usual "power dump" that's happening from the antibiotics upsetting the balance of normal flora in my gut. Here are the other pleasantries:

-oral thrush
-yeast infection (Please pass the Monistat...STAT!)
-ringing in my ears
-excessive dry mouth
-wacky blood sugars (very low--between 40 and 60 within an hour or two of infusing
-C. diff.

Are you at home or in the hospital?
Home for a week now. I'll be off work for another week.

What are you doing while you're on IVs?
Spending lots of quality time with Gimli and preparing my manuscript for the writers conference next month.

Right on IV club!!!!!!!!!! Wooooo!!!

What are you on?
Aztreonam and Meropenum

How long have you been on it?
I, too, have been on them since Valentines Day. I was one of the luckier ones to spend Valentines day in the ER

Does it seem to be working?
Yes, they seem to be doing what they need to be doing. They're stopping my violent coughing fits, so I am forever grateful.

Have you suffered any side effects, and if so, care to share?
So far I really haven't. I always get really tired though anytime I'm on IV's. They're just super draining.

Are you at home or in the hospital?
I am at home

What are you doing while you're on IVs?
My usual routine, unfortunately it doesn't stop due to the IV's. I'm in my senior year of college so I'm thisclose to May. I must push forward!! I have a full fledged diagnosis of Senior-itis. So unfortunately the schooling and the interning are still full throttle. Plus, I'm newly diagnosed diabetic, so the insulin and monitoring the sugar is like a job in itself!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMILY!!!

Kris, your pug is too darn cute!!! We have a black puggy and a white and tan chug (rescued so may be a couple other breeds as well). I'll try to post a pic.

So, I guess I was right about a lot of us in the IV club right now! Sheesh! Hope everyone feels better soon!!! Keeping you in my thoughts.

I am on Tobra every 12 hours & Aztreonam every 8 hours.

I have been on since 1/30 when I was admitted to the hospital. Continuing at home since discharge yesterday.

HUGE difference. I have color, can breath at rest & can talk without it flowing out.

No major side affects except yeast/thrush.

I am mobile at home now that I have the eclipse so I have been paying bills, going online, cleaning up the house etc.

In the hospital I didnt have the energy nor desire to do much so I slept a lot when given the chance.

Wanderlost,
My son gets redmans syndrome when he's on iv vancomycin, and so they desensitize him before each dose by giving him iv benedryl before each dose of vanc.,but it's not permanent.

Was supposed to start IVs this evening, but the order got botched so I have to start tomorrow. I will be on Tobra every 24 hours and Zosyn every 8. I just want to START so I can feel better! On another note, how many of you have ports and how old were you when you got yours in? Mine is going on 9 years and still works great. I'm curious to see if others have had as good of an experience.

Hi, Piper...

Don't you just love when orders get messed up?!? I was inpatient for the first 24 hours of IV therapy and the doc didn't order me ANY chest PT! Can you imagine?!? I am always diligent about doing my vest at least twice a day, but the entire time I was in the hospital, they didn't give me the vest or pound on me or anything cause it "wasn't ordered". Urgh.

I still get PICCs for meds. I usually go about 8-12 months in between so not sure a port would be a good decision at this point or not. I'm curious to know when those of you with a port decided to get one and how often you use it for your meds? I've heard that if you don't go on meds too often its best to get PICC'd as long as you can?
