Does anyone ever hear people say "Are you sure he has Cystic Fibrosis he looks healthy to me?" There is this lady in our little town we live in and she works at the local Walmart and there for the longest time she would ask me that every time i seen her. So finally I started avoiding her. Or trying to go in there when i thought she wouldnt be. Why would I want my child to have something like that. I would love for him to be disease free if i could. I heard that every time and then she would go into the story about her neice and nephew had it and all the stuff they had to do back in the day. (She is probably 65 or older) I finally one day said to her when she asked me that again. " Well you know times have changed and a lot of research has been done and there are a lot of new treatments now a days" and then walked off.
Whenever he signs up for sports and stuff people dont understand what CF is and when they find out it is not what they thought it was. I had a lady at a soccer game overhear me talking about Austin and she said he walks great. He doesn't need a walker or anything. I said he has Cystic Fibrosis not cerebral palsy. When she heard CF she thought i said CP. She was really embarrassed

People just don't know. That's why it's your job to educate them.

I'm sure there are thousands of rare diseases out there that you've never heard of either.

I think we should all give peopel the benefit of the doubt when they haven't heard of a disease that only 30,000 people have (out of 300,000,000 that live in this country).......

I had a similar thing happen to me. I was at the neighborhood pool with my sister and my port was accessed and you can see it. Well the pool gaurd comes over and to talk to us and he sees my accessed port and hears my continual cough. He asks me what my port was and why I had it. So I told him I have Cystic Fibrosis and its my port for IV antibiotics. He says "oh yea I had a cousin that had that but she couldn't talk, and she likes her tummy tickeled." then he ends that conversation, I dont know exactly what he was talking about but I dont think he was thinking of Cystic Fibrosis.

Before the genetic tests, I had 4 cf clinics tell my parents the same thing! I've had 4 sweat tests in 4 different clinics because no one believed it, because I looked/was too healthy.

Next time, just tell her that keeping him that way is the reason you do all his medicines and PT everday, and thanks for the compliment on you and your son's hard work .
