Why can I no longer eat beans w/o horrible gas?

Beans are a staple of my diet. I eat them 2-3 times a week, and my kids eat them too. They are so great for you. But for a couple months now, I've been getting awful-smelling gas with them...and I mean AWFUL. I am using same the brand of canned beans as always-so that is not the problem.

Anyway, I found an interesting article that explains some people have this issue, specifically, some people make methane and others don't. But it doesn't explain why someone would suddenly start having this issue though.

It also explains what is in the product Beano (an enzyme in a type of aspergillus that digests the bean-specific sugar before it reaches your large intestine). Interesting. Probably something to avoid.

So my theory is that the probiotic, Reuteri, that I was using maybe messed me up?

Anyone get bad gas with that one?

I've switched back to Culturelle, but have no improvement in the stink.

I don't want to leave Reuteri with a bad name here. I no longer think it is the culprit of my bad gas.

This morning as I brushed my teeth with mouthwash instead of toothpaste, as per my dentist's recommendation to reduce gum erosion, I realized that the hideous gas had also coincided with this switch from toothpaste to mouthwash. There is sorbitol in mouthwash, and even though I don't swallow it on purpose, I was instructed to not rinse in order to let the flouride soak in. There is sorbitol in toothpaste too, but I likely rinse that more thoroughly, and maybe there is less?

I've known since I was a kid that I cannot consume "sugar-free" without having raging diarrhea and gas (I put two and two together as a kid after eating an entire a pack of Velamints.) My parameters are one stick of gum for gas, and >1 for violent emptying of the large intestine.
This may be why I have major issues with some chain foods--dunkin donuts for example. I can't do starbucks' prepped sandwiches either, or a lot of chain cold foods. A little digging has shown me that sorbitol is used to keep foods moist: sandwiches, cookies, etc. This is an article of a dried plum organization talking about how the high sorbitol content in their powder makes it great for high-end sandwiches.

I know this is so irrelevant to the subject of CF, and I apologize. I figured maybe someone else here has this issue and it compounds their CF-related weight issues?

Oh well, I'm off to get some Tom's of Maine toothpaste and just let my gums erode...
