This is a disease that origionated in Europe which is a country that is predominantly caucasian. Through the generations it has spread throughout different continents, (mainly the UK and the US) but you would be hard pressed to find an african american, mexican, russian (just for examples) with CF. I believe there is one african american on this website and that is the ONLY one I have ever heard of. For example, there is no dobut some caucasian in her immediate family (mom or dad) and some in her extended family as well (whatever parent is not caucasian has grandparents or greatgrandparents who had to have some caucasian in them).

I hope this answers the question. You might be able to find some more specific statistics and details if you type in CF and UK into a search.

Actually i am caucasian and my husband is bi-racial and our daughter has CF, at our clinic they have pics of alot of thier patients and there are probably about 4 or 5 african american children in these pictures. I have often wondered the same thing though.

Its pretty much the same reason that sickle cell anemia occurs more often in african amercans. It just originated there.

When my brother was a baby at Stanford children's hospital my parents met a hispanic couple who had 4 babies that they never got to bring home because their CF was so severe they just didn't make it for more than a few weeks. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> So while its rare, it does occur in other races.

Hi, just a quick note, Julie's information was all correct except Im not sure if she meant to say "spread throughout different countries" instead of continents (since UK is a country) but its true its more common in northern europe, US, and Austrailia. Austrailia has one of the highest rates of ppl with cf per capita after Ireland and then the UK.
