why do none of you use GSH

I have never heard of it, what do you use it for? Is it to replace albuterol or pulmozyme? or in combination with them?

I tried inhaling GSH in January. I ended up with a decent lung bleed within 5 days of starting, something that hadn't happened to me in over 6 years. I had to discontinue the GSH to rule it out as the culprit for the bleed.

I think the reason most doctors don't endorse GSH is because GSH in the United States is not regulated by the FDA. Neither are other over the counter supplements. So there's no way to be sure what you're getting is GSH. Like my doctor said, if I were swallowing GSH caps at least my body would just excrete the supplement that my body didn't need. But when patients inhale any substance I'm assuming as much benefit as you may get, you're also putting yourself in that much more risk for adverse effects. It's just plain more risky.

Personally I was able to come out of an exacerbation without IVs by using the GSH and have stayed well since my 5 day trial with it. If it weren't for the coinciding lung bleed, I'd still be using it.

There is a phase 2 study being done on inhaled GSH in europe right now. Results are due out in 2009. There are ways you can research and find reputable sources (third party verification) for both inhaled and oral GSH in the US. Oral is different from inhaled with inhaled needed to be at a neutral PH (it is mixed with bisodium carbonate). We find oral GSH helps our son's appetite and weight gain...this is our experience.

Because GSH, NAC and other natural substances can not be patented and therefore are not money makers...the research doesn't happen very quickly even if there is research to demonstrate potential benefits (there are pilot studies and research indicating inhaled GSH helps lung function).

I'd love to see more study in this area (natural substances and natural support)in CF research. For now, if you choose to use supplements in this country you have to be an excellent consumer and be willing to really observe your choices. Holistic practioners can be a wonderful addition to your medical team with regard to deciding what and how much of a supplement to give.

I researched and wrote an article about supplement usage...doesn't tell you what to do just how to find the resources to make informed decisions. It might help..<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cfnutrition4life.com/cfnu/readarticle.php?article_id=133

I hope more on NAC, GSH and BITC as well as nutrition, herbs and complimentary care research begins to be supported. We need to ask for this research to be done as parents.
