Hi everyone,
If both parents carry d508 will all the kids they have get the same mutation (dd508)
If they have c.f.?

YES. But their other genetic makeup and as well as their environment and compliance with treatments will determine how sick or healthy they become.

No. The kids will not necessarily get a mutation. Each parent has two CFTR genes. If they each carry d508, the other gene will be "normal" (unless the parent has CF). The child gets one gene from each parent. So the child could get the normal gene from each parent and not even be a carrier. Could get one good gene from mom and one "bad" gene from dad. Could get one "bad" gene from mom and one "good" gene from dad. Or get one bad gene from mom and one bad one from dad. The last is the only case of the child having cf. So there is a 25% chance of CF. 25% chance of nothing. And 50% chance of being a carrier like mom and dad.

I think liveinhope understands that not every kid from 2 carriers will have CF. She asked IF the kid DOES have CF would they have the same mutations, and the answer is yes.

Liveinhope:

If both parents have ONLY one mutation (D508) then the answer to your question is yes. If, however, one, or both, parents have a second mutation, then the landscape changes. There are almost 2000 known mutations and unless you and your spouse have each has a FULL CYSTIC FIBROSIS SEQUENCING, there is no certain answer to your question. I suspect that you were given a screening for a small number (32-250)of the most common mutations.
