I've seen some mention of the issue of vaginal mucus before in general and that it's "thicker" in cf patients, but I'm not sure if that's what I'm seeing or if it's something else. Frequently (around once or twice a day if it occurs), but not daily, I notice a big glob of mucus like a plug that is chosing to exit my body. I typically notice it after peeing, but it seems like this size of a thing would show up even if it came out at a different time.

This is not just a little line of mucus. I'm talking the size of those big round gumballs you get out of machines if you took the plug and rolled it into a ball. It is very sticky, but definitely seems connected like a certain "defined plug". I have asked the gyn about it, and she said "that's just cf", but I'm not sure if she's basing this off of anything other than she knows I have them, she knows I have cf, therefore they are just cf.

These plugs don't seem to be a problem of any sort and do not appear to accompany respiratory infections or anything, they just seem so extreme (and not like something I've heard of) that I thought it was worth checking with yall.

Guess lubrication will probably never be a problem - lol

I never had that. Ask your doctor if you can culture it next time you see it. You can get a specimen container similar to a sputum cup.

When I first read your post, I thought it was ovulation. If this happens only once per month then I say it is ovulation. If it is more often sounds like a CF thing.

It really bugs me when docs say that some symptom is a CF thing. I have to say I have never experienced anything like that before. I could see things being thicker, but I would have what you have described checked out a bit more. Good Luck to ya!

I get that about my time of ovulation.  It is clear but I can
definitely tell it is mucus. It is normally about the size of a
nickle.  Then I don't have it again for about a month.
 The funny thing is it doesn't happen every month. Some times
it is like clockwork and other times nothing.  I have never
asked about it.  I have been going to bring it up but never
have.  Thanks for asking.

dear anonymous - does it happen all of the time? If it is occasional, you might try charting when it happens. My mucus at ovulation was often like rubber cement - a blob in my underwear. The ovulation mucus happens about two weeks before your period comes - a great predictor if your periods are irregular.

I used to have that happen to me sometimes. It only happend once a month and I only happen probably 5 or 6 times. But it hasn't happened in about 2 1/2 years, so I really don't know what it was.

p.s. this mucus is likely coming from the cervix. Cervical mucus changes through the cycle in response to changing estrogen/progesterone levels. When estrogen is high, just before ovulation, it can keep sperm alive for up to five days. I have taught a method of birth control that is based on observing these changes, and others, during the cycle - Natural Family Planning.

I get what Momtana is describing and consider it a normal part of CF. Interestingly, it stopped while I was on the birth control pill. I've been doing the charting that Momtana describes and am finding the 'rubber cement' visits on exactly the 22 day after the start of my period. This month I am tracking my ovulation with a urine sample and I'm eager to see if my LH level increases around the time of this discharge which would link it to ovulation...which I'm sure it has to do with just the question remains .... am I ovulating.

Lauren, When do you get your period after the day 22 mucus discharge? Ovulation happens 14 days (plus or minus) before your period comes - if this mucus comes around then it is a good indicator of fertility and ovulation. Let me know if you have any questions ..... I have been teaching cycle stuff for a long time and it still interests me, especially now in light of CF. Do you also take your temperature -with the basal body thermometer?? - it's a great way to know when you ovulated.

I only had that happen a couple days after my last cervical biopsy. But not when I had the first one. But tht quack doctor who did the first one took too big of a sample and I bled quite a bit from it.

Momtana, My cycle is 33-34 days long with the discharge on day 22 so in answer to your question the discharge is 11-12 days before my period visits. I'm going to do home ovulation testing this month so it will be interesting to see the correlation between the discharge and ovulation. I just pray that I'm ovulating. All signs seem to be saying so. I am tracking my temperature. I had the classic after birth control temperature cycle for the first couple of months (I am 5 months off the pill) where the temp would spike mid month but instead of staying high until my period it would crash within a day or two. I was sick in June and my temp was out of wack (period was not effected) so I got off track with the tracking but I've been good for the last month at taking the temps so I should graph it again. I read a great book, Your Fertility Signals - Avoiding or Planning for a Pregnancy Naturally by Merryl Winstein that taught me the method I believe is the one you taught.

hi, Lauren. Sounds like you have a good understanding of your cycle - the day 22 discharge is in the fertile time before the period on day 33-34. What does your temperature tell you now? I have had it but not monthly. I have had dime size and nickle size. I has horrible vaginal/cervical mucus as a teenager and lots of yeast infections. As I got older it improved. I once heard and saw a chunk of it in the toilet

Well was told by doctor when that happens your ovulating. I've had one child and currently pregnant me and husband tried for 5 yrs to conceive I had normal periods during that time but didn't ovulate every month sometimes it was like 3x a year. Its said that when CF women are experiencing stress or increase in infections sometimes messed with this problem . That's another reason why its so hard for women to conceive.

I've noticed a similar trend during ovulation, I also noticed that I don't ovulate these last two years unless I've recently had IV antibiotics. I figure it's related to the body not ovulating if there is infection or illness present. Last month I started on the 6th and ended up on IVS the 20-1st and I ovulated sometime around the 25th and now it's the 10th and I still haven't started. Has anyone ever noticed IVs messing with your cycle? I don't think I need to be terribly concerned about pregnancy, my husband had a vasectomy is 2010.

Once or twice a day seems to be a lot. I've had that happen just a few times in my life (maybe 10 times). I don't think it was always that amount as you say though (maybe the size of half a gumball usually). I hope you figure out the exact cause of that issue. Good luck .

if you are trying to conceive you might want to have your progesterone level checked for a literal phase defect which could cause a miscarriage. Typically you want about 14 days between ovulation and period to make sure time to implant and grow. If you don't have enough progesterone you'll start you period earlier likev11 to 12 days after ovulation. It's a simple blood test and you can supplement if low. If you get a positive pregnancy now with the cycle you described you might want to call ob ASAP and ask for them to run you progesterone level. If not preto then you'll want them to ripen on a certain cycle day tat they'll know...if forget bu you can google.
