Women only question

I have been wondering something for awhile and wondered if any other women have felt this way. For a year I was on the birth control patch, I stopped using it in january. Before I started the patch I was constantly on antiobiotics for pseudamonas and flairups, but while I was on the patch my health seemed to be remarkable improved. There were two other things I started at the time I also started the bc patch, I went on zithromax and sporonax and have been on them since, but since I quit the bc patch in january my health seems to be back where it was before I was on it. Maybe I am crazy, but I wondered if any other females on birth control had noticed a change in their health --- for the better. I asked my nurse and she said it is possible, since hormones have a big effect on the body. I just wondered what some other CFers thought about this, or if you have any similar reactions. thanks, female 27 w/cf

Hi,I wonder if the patch contains a high amount of progesterone. I have gone through 2 pregnancies and have done really well with them. Progesterone levels are high during pregnancy. Progesterone is also high between ovulating and the start of the period. A study has been done that shows women have higher PFT's during this time. I know this is true for me.Hope this answers some of your questions.Tammy 43wcf

How about the Pill? I'm just about to start using the Minesse Pill [first time in my life I'm using oral contraceptives] and now reading this topic, I'm wondering. Does it make any difference for CF?

I've never really been on birth control but I know that my health during my pregnancy was excellent. I, as Tammy said, suspect it was due to high hormone levels. HollyCatheryn

Hello,I was on the pill for a year, when i was taking certain kinds though it made me WAY sicker, but then i found one and i seemed to be a lot healthier. Well i was put on new antibiotics that make it so birth control no longer works so i am not on it anymore and am sooo sick. SO i think i am going to have to switch back, i mean a significant change. My lung function dropped by 35% in a month and has not gone back up at all. SO it seems to me that my body needs the boost of femininity. Thanks for posting this, it really made me think.Julie

has anyone done a study on this? it would be nice if someone found a direct link to the pill and good cf health. ive been on the pill for about 5 years now. 4 of those 5 years was a higher dose pill for acne, worked like a charm. i wonder if its helped with my cf?

I am the original poster of the question. I am wondering what complications any have had being on birth control pills, in regard to antibiotics. I went on the patch because I was told that with CF and our absorption issues and the fact that the pill can become less effective during antibiotic use the pill wasn't the best choice. Having only had the patch I must say it was nice not having to add another pill to my day. Sounds like many of you have been on the pill, and just wondering its effectivness. thanks for all the replys -Sarah27w/cf

There was an issue of the CF Roundtable (a newsletter for CF adults, by CF adults) a while back that had as its focus topic, men's/women's issues and I remember an article about this exact thing. It might be worth looking up to see if you can get a reprint or a back issue. cfroundtable.comHollyCatheryn

i know that the contraception aspect of the pill is lowered by anti biotics. ive heard people say they sometimes get unexpected periods when on anti biotics but i never have. i take mine 3 months in a row and anti biotics have never affected the way my periods work.

I am so excited to see this posting! Years ago, I went on the pill - and I felt great healthwise, and was able to put on a few pounds. I kept telling my doctors that their female patients should go on the pill - because it'd be an easy way for them to put on a few pounds.I've been laughed at because of my theory that CF women should take birth control - not for the birth control but for the health benefits. Also - you should use a second form of birth control (condom) because of all the meds we are on that can counteract oral contraceptives.Anyway - I stopped the pill because the other side effects (loss of libido and the weight gain - which I didn't need the benefits of because my pancrease is ok).I'm wondering if those new mini-pills would offer the hormone benefits but not increase my weight...anyone know? I obviously wouldn't use this as my only form of birth control since the mini-pill would probably not work while taking my daily dose of Zithromax <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">Piper

I know this may seem like an odd use for the pill, but after my 2 pulmonary embolizations, i still had some hemoptysis and corresponded with other cf patients with problem hemoptysis, and they told me about using the pill as a means to control the bleeding, and i tried it and it did make somewhat of a difference. I noticed i had less frequent problems with hemoptysis. I then found out they used to use estrogen for hemoptysis problems, because it makes the blood vessels pliable, and there fore less likely to break. I've been off of the pill for a few months now to see if my problems with hemoptysis have subsided and i notice that about 2 weeks before my period is due , i start having streaks of blood in my sputum and sometimes a bit more , so i am going to resume the pill again. Good to know there is something out there that can help even if it isnt made for what we use it for.~Diane 39/ cf / diabetes / b.cepacia

I am on the depo-provera shot...and have been on it now for almost 6 yrs. I love it! I dont have to worry about antibiotics interfering with its effectiveness. When I was on the pill I always had to use another form of contraception when on antibiotics. Also, my mom has had breast cancer twice...and the docs dont want me on the pill because of the high dose of estrogen in it. So I tried the depo after the birth of my daughter. I have had no problems with it at all....and I dont have a monthly cycle...which is even better! Deaalmost 31 w/ CF

Dug this one up... seems some people are very fond of the pill. I've never thought of it this way. Very interesting.

I am on the patch right now and it hasn't done anything for me healthwise. i actually don't like it because of how dirty it gets and am thinking of going off of it. But when I went on zithromax and sporonox I felt a lot better so I would bet that it was the meds that did it.

I'd wonder about treatments effect female hormone levels.
Do any of you get them checked?
The treatments certainly did a number on my husband's testosterone levels - the testosterone patch was a godsend for him.
(sorry to put the guy information in a woman only thread).
