Work from Home ?

Can anyone help me on this... My daughter was recently diagnosed at age 9, I am a single Mom and have been work driven in my career for over 15 years. My daughter being diagnosed later has resulted in the need of more treatments per day, 2 are not sufficient and the Dr. wants 4 per day. I cannot manage the treatments and everything that comes with it and my career. I manage a portfolio of an estinmated $500 million worth of commercial property which needs my full attention, but I am unable to do so any longer. Can anyone guide me in the direction to any legitimate jobs I can do from home. I plan on opening my own business, a small business in the near future, but for now it would be some means of support for us.

Thanks,
Gina

Is there any way you can do your current job from home, at least partially? Aside from whether or not your employer would 'let' you do it, could you manage the workload and type of work from a home-based environment and still be able to provide the care your daughter needs? If so, there are laws that can help you do this. If not, and depending on what state you're in, I might suggest looking into the Notary profession, especially since you are familiar with real estate on some level (sounds like a very big level, at that!). What about something else related to real estate, like a broker or agent? I know the real estate market is pretty crappy right now, but as an agent, you could make your own hours (couldn't you?). It's not exactly work from home, but if you could have a more flexible schedule, presumably, you could still care for your daughter AND work.

Another idea (and this may sound totally lame) is to check out Craigslist.org. A lot of employers are posting job ads there now, and many are home-based and/or flexible. Just thinking of something you could look at immediately to get you by until your small business takes off.

Good luck.

My first inclination was similar to Wheezie's idea -- see if you can do what you are doing now, only from home as much as possible. Many employers are now transitioning to home based workers, they are finding that people are more productive and happier with their home/work balance in life. Talk to your employer about working most of your hours based from home - if that is a complete no-go, check into the possibility of tapping into your FMLA rights - at least for the short term (12 weeks) it would give you time off and guarantee your position at work should you want to return.

Is your 9 year old in school? If she is to get 4 treatments a day and she is in school is there a plan for that to happen during school hours or are you planning on before and after school hours only ?
