Working CF into your Day at Work

Here's a link to an article I had published about my day as a CFer. It reads as a play by play throughout my day with work and home life.

I wake up at 5:30.

Do nebs/exercise at the same time (exercise is 3 times a week)
Do my Vest
Head out the door by 8 (my neb & Vest routine while on TOBI takes 110 minutes)

Get home by 5. Throw nebs in the dishwasher (I already have a clean, dry set for the night...I buy extra nebs)

I'm in bed by 8-8:30 so I ensure I get 8-9 hours of sleep that I need to avoid infection.

It's not easy. It's not always fun. But it can be done.

But for me keeping healthy means I do better at work. And I have more fun at work. So it's a win-win all the way around.

My first job in Japan, I started getting up at about 7 am, and the 'now' ex would make me breakfast, while I got dressed. I would take baths at night, despite being used to doing a routine in the states to take a shower in the am, before work. I would then come home from work about 7 pm, for dinner.
But, as my years in the company, and marriage went along, I started getting myself up at 6 am, made my own breakfast, did the dishes, and then went off to work, to come home about 10:30 pm, or later to eat dinner. Most cases, the ex would 'nuke' my meals, but I always ended up doing the dishes while she took her bath, first! I'd sometimes be to bed by 11:30 or midnight. I also had to work on
Saturdays, too. My average O.T. for the month was about 60, but I only got paid for 20!
After changing jobs, my commute time has increased, so it takes me an hour and a half to get to work. I work from 9 am to 5:30 pm, except Mondays and Thursdays, where I put in mandatory O.T. to teach English to my co-workers. At this point, I don't have other work to do yet, but I imagine I will be seeing rougher days. I usually return home by about 7 pm, but on the days that I teach, it ends up around 8 or 8:30. I usually just eat and go to bed.
Because I seem to be quite lucky to a certain extent, I don't need the aeresols, and I can get away with what I'm using for supplements and herbs for digestion. The proper diet helps, too.
However, with the bug I got since last December, I still don't feel 100%, seem to become tired quickly. Hopefully, a three day weekend will come up so I can rest a bit more, since I don't have any sick days, yet.

Working full time and taking additional advanced nursing classes are time consuming in and of themselves.

My schedule right now which I can admit sometimes slacks is this

I get up at 4 45 am.. and I start up (thumper) aka y vest... I boot up my computer and start up my nebs.... total treatment time is about 30 minutes when I am not on Tobi 50 minutes while on Tobi.

The months I am on Tobi I shower the night before so that saves me some time, otherwise, the months off I begin to shower and get dressed around 5 15 am...

I make my lunch... and out the door for my hour ride to work... IN the car.. I swallow down my loads of pills a little at a time because I am usually queezy in the morning... I arrive to work by 6 45 am...

My day at work does not allow for me to take any time for my treatments, the ER is very, very, busy and I am lucky if I can get 10 minutes for lunch....I always joke that I am going to strap a foley cath bag to my leg so I don't have to take the time to pee...

If I am having a bad coughing spell the doctors and nurses I work with drag me to the back to let me do a treatment.. (they cover for me) though I hate it when this happens I don't want to be different then they are..

I am supposed to be done with work by 3 30, Usually by the time I give report to the next shift I am leaving between 4 and 4 30..

I drive home for an hour... do chores, food shop, and eat dinner... I try to do my treatments by 7 pm and because I require so much sleep, I try to be asleep by 9 pm...

My schedule is not workable for me right now.. I am working on changing it.. I might be switching to working 3, 12 hour shifts or 4, 10 hour shifts, just to try to cut a day or two out....

I am also switching to the evening shift which is much better for me to work...since I can sleep in in the morning..

I think the key for me is factoring in the amount of sleep I need, then everything else I work around it... With my adrenal glands not working, I can be really thrown off my levels if I don't get enough sleep or if I over do it.

I work full time. I have adjusted my hours so I miss rush hour traffic, so I work either 8:30-5:30 or 9-6, depending on how I feel when I wake up. Fortunately, I have always been a short sleeper. I feel best when I get about 6-7 hours of sleep. I've been that way since I was a little kid. I wake up around 6-6:30, do a half hour of nebs, reading the paper, eatiang oatmeal, then 30 minutes on the vest. I can take a shower and be completely ready to go to work in another half hour. I have totally wash and wear hair and a simple makeup routine. I'm ready to go by 8 to be at work by 8:30. I don't do any treatments at work. I am currently on oxygen 24/7, so I have to swap out an e-tank partway through the day at work. I do my evening routine the same way, starting it at around 9;30 or 10:00. I am often on chat during my evening vest treatment. I try to go to bed by midnight.

The one thing I haven't worked into my schedule is routine exercise. But that's because I'm lazy. I could certainly do that instead of watching TV or other things I do instead.

I hate taking naps, so rarely do. I have to be really sick to do that. I only do TOBI during an exacerbation, and when I do, I just tack on a half hour to the neb schedule and either go into work a half hour later or get up a half hour earlier.

I rarely skip any of my nebs or vest, and definitely notice a difference if I do.

Also, I live with my husband and 17 year old son (and 20 year old daughter when college is on break), so I have tons of help at home. Otherwise I'm sure I would be exhausted from handling all the household chores.
