Working with CF

Hi everyone.

I am graduating from college in May and it is getting to be about that time where I decide what to do with my life. The last couple years at school I have had some trouble wtih getting sick and having to go to the hospital way more often then I would like. I have been three times since decemeber!

My question for you all is how many of you work full time? What types of jobs are you all doing? How do you deal with missing work when you are feeling sick or have to go into the hospital for IVs?

Any suggestions or advice would be great, I am just trying to figure out how I want to go about entering the working world... =)

Thanks

I work full time, but my situation is not ideal. I work in a small company which is perpetually understaffed, so it is impossible for me to take time off. To avoid this, I would suggest finding a job with a low turn-over rate. For IV's, I do them from home rather than in the hospital, and I schedule treatment around my work hours.

Without knowing what field you are going into, that's about all the advice I have. Though, you may find by working full time you will be sick less often, especially if the job involves some amount of physical activity. I am a cook, so my job is very tiring and difficult, but I am sure the high level of activity required has played a part in keeping my health stable.

Good luck.

Melissa,

Your graduating college but are unsure what you want to do with your life, that sounds funny! To some extent you most have already decided what you want or you wouldn't have gone to college. What is your degree in??? To answer your question, I do IV's from home and have a port inplace to make life a bit easier. I have always worked with IV's(even when I was a floor RT) so I am used to it now. I work with my docs in my med frequencies so it is easier for me, I just go in late and come home a littel early.

have a nice day!!!

Hi Melissa,
When I first graduated, I worked in mental health (with kids....not ideal for CF). But when I had to take time off, I'd just schedule it around the amt. of vacation/sick time I had. Make sure you fill out the FMLA (I think that is what they are called) forms, youd' have to work with a company that has over 50 employees. But it will make it worth your time.
Looking back, I would have/should have choosen a job that didn't surround me with kids, that wasn't so physically/emotionally exhausting, etc. I'd go for more of a 'desk' job, a good ol 9 to 5'er.
Now I work, but my husband and I own the company so I go in and leave when I want, which makes it nice b/c I never have to miss a treatment in the a.m.
Good luck to you and congrats on finishing school!

Home IVs are the golden ticket. When I'm on IVs I take Friday afternoon off to go to the doc and pick up my meds, then I make up that time over the weekend. I'm lucky that everyone at my job is really understanding and I am healthy enough that I don't miss much work other than my appointments.
