What questions do you have, my son has had one for the last five years. He got it when he was five years old. We use it at night to give him extra calories. It is connected to a pump that pumps formula like Two Cal over about seven hours. There are many different ways this can be done. We also used it to take vitamins and other meds that tasted bad. Worked really good for that when he was little. The surgery can be done a few ways too. I will let your doctor explain the procedure. Overall, I like having the ability to push more calories while he is asleep, Massey has complained at times, but that seems to be when the balloon has slightly deflated and fluid is leaking around the buttom. Milk-o-Mag seems to work great for the irritation. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Helen,

My boys both have g-tubes (two years now). they are both very private too and have never told anyone. It has helped with their weight especially when they are sick. I'd recommend it.

I have a dumb question for the anon. about the milk of magnesia. My son's tube leaks sometimes too. Do you drink the M.o.m or put it on the irritation?

Thanks Jane

Helen, when I was 16 I was told I needed one and I had no say in it. I was terrified of the surgery and fought them on it so instead the told me I could learn to put one down my nose every night into my stomach. Each morning I could remove it and be completely normal. As hard of a decision as it was I chose that rout. For six years, six times a week I passed a tiny tube down my nose and into my stomach. I gained and maintained weight but I also had several soar throats and I still had to do it even when sick and had a cold. I don't regret my choice though. I am 29 now and haven't done a tube feeding in eight years. I drink two Scandishakes, once before bed and once first thing in the morning instead. The amount of calories in the two shakes equal the amount of calories I was getting in the tub feeding.

Sorry, i don't mean to offend anyone and this is probably a DUMB question but her goes.
I was wondering why? would an adult cf'er need a G-tube. Why can't you just swallow the conent's you need rather than G-tube or even putting a tube in through your nose into your stomach.

Sorry, i just don't understand. Can someone help answer my question.

If a CFers appetite isnt there that we know that eating enough calories wont happen. To drink enough of a shake to get enough calories is questionable also. With a G tube is administered over time giving your body a chance to handle it & I am assuming in larger quantities (correct me if I wrong those that have one) of calories then what we could do on our own!
